"No, no way!"
Misunderstood by Watanabe Gengo, Yuki's face turned red with excitement as she tried to explain herself.
She had just imitated an adult cough, but he misinterpreted it as her throat feeling uncomfortable.
"Oh, uh, would you like something to drink?"
In contrast to Yuki's nervousness, Watanabe Gengo remained calm and composed. It seemed that as a former accomplice in a criminal organization, he faced his former victim without any unnatural behavior. This could also imply that he was not an intentional or knowledgeable perpetrator.
"Um..."
In response to Watanabe Gengo's question, Mizuo began to seriously look at the menu. Yuki, on the other hand, was at a loss and had no choice but to climb up the chair again to browse it together with Mizuo.
The result was obvious. The prices of the drinks in the cafe, which catered to adult customers, were naturally not affordable for elementary school students like them. The two little girls earnestly flipped through the menu from the first page to the last, and then back to the first page again from the last, but they couldn't find a drink that their wallets could afford.
Watanabe Gengo silently watched them, then picked up his cane and stood up, walking over to them and whispering.
"Take your time. I'll go pour you two glasses of water first."
The two little girls didn't understand that this was Watanabe Gengo's act of kindness towards them. They vaguely replied with "Mhm" and continued to focus on the menu.
Perhaps they couldn't understand because Watanabe Gengo's voice was too arrogant, which made the listener feel a sense of contempt.
A few minutes later, Watanabe Gengo returned with a plate, carrying two glasses of water on a tray. Despite his limp from using a cane, not a single drop of water spilled.
When the two glasses of water were placed in front of the two girls, they politely said thank you, but they were still undecided on which drink to order.
Feeling helpless about their persistence and lack of understanding, Watanabe Gengo lightly tapped the table with his fingers, diverting their attention from the menu to himself, and then said.
"Little girls, it's alright if you don't order. You didn't come to the cafe just to drink, right?"
Watanabe Gengo's words timely saved Yuki from her dilemma of how to get to the main topic. At the same time, it brought Koga Mizuo, who had completely forgotten about the matter, back to reality.
"Yes, we didn't come to drink!"
Koga Mizuo regained her spirit and made a confident declaration.
In response to this little girl's funny seriousness, Watanabe Gengo smiled, although it appeared to be a mocking and contemptuous smile.
"It doesn't matter if you order or not. Even if the manager hears me say that, he'll probably fire me. But, well, my salary is fixed, so the revenue doesn't matter to me."
"So, what is the purpose of your visit, little girls?"
The relaxed atmosphere disappeared in an instant with Watanabe Gengo's question. This question made Yuki and Mizuo immediately recall the fact that the man in front of them was once a criminal.
Yuki instinctively grabbed Mizuo's hand, and Mizuo squeezed back forcefully. Just like when they were about to enter this cafe, the situation could change with the next question, and danger could come unexpectedly.
