19. The oracle of the "Eight-Winged Angel": "May I ask if you have any dried fish?"
update icon Updated at 2023/7/24 16:10:12

Time goes back to not long ago.

Inside the city of Rodeport, there was a street fortification.

"Ah-ah-ah—"

Charlotte swung her cross-shaped long sword with force.

The long sword broke the spear that the enemy thrust towards the girl.

Seizing the opportunity, the girl took a step forward.

The long sword pierced through the body of a Turkish soldier.

But immediately, three or four Turkish people surrounded her.

"Die!"

The Turkish soldier sneered, waving the sword in his hand, attacking the girl.

Clang—

Charlotte fiercely blocked the enemy's sword with all her might, then pushed it upwards.

The Turkish soldier couldn't resist the tremendous force of the holy knight and took several steps back.

Taking advantage of this gap, Charlotte took a sudden step forward and swung her sword horizontally.

"Ah!"

A Turkish soldier let out a heart-wrenching scream as the girl chopped off his left leg in the middle.

"Kill!"

Charlotte shouted, changing the direction of her long sword and thrusting it up, piercing another Turkish person's abdomen.

At this moment, reinforcements from the knight brigade arrived.

They quickly slaughtered the Turkish people who had surrounded Charlotte.

"Captain, are you alright?"

A knight asked with concern.

"I'm fine, don't worry about me."

At this moment, the girl's face was covered in blood stains, her crimson battle robe was stained with dirt and smoke, and her once shiny and sturdy armor was in tatters. Her body was covered in wounds large and small.

If an ordinary person had suffered such serious injuries, they would have likely died from excessive blood loss.

But Charlotte managed to persist until now, relying on the healing abilities and strong will of a holy knight.

"Is it going to end like this?"

The girl's heart was filled with bitterness.

Is it really going to be the destruction of the knight brigade's honor, inheritance, and spirit that has lasted for five hundred years, all in her hands?

Indeed, I am an inadequate captain.

Other than the power of a holy knight, I have nothing... I'm worthless in every way...

I can't have anything... I can't protect anything...

Yes, as a sinner like me... even the merciful angel won't protect me, right?

But even so... with the sword in my hand... I will fight for my comrades and the people until the very end!

A firm expression appeared on the girl's face as she tightened her grip on her long sword once again.

At this moment, the Turkish people launched another attack on the street fortification.

Dozens of Turkish soldiers wielding swords rushed into the street where Charlotte was.

The crowded mass of people packed the already narrow alley.

Looking at the approaching enemies.

The girl couldn't help but pray in her heart again.

"Oh, sacred eight-winged angel, even if you are unwilling to protect this granddaughter who is a sinner... at least save the people of this city! I, Charlotte de Villare, am willing to offer everything in my possession to the most merciful angel, regardless of the cost... I swear in the name of myself and my family!"

In her prayer, the girl even used her real name, which she didn't want to mention.

Just when despair shrouded the entire city, a miracle happened!

A gigantic monster, with a body as massive as a mountain, suddenly appeared in the Turkish camp!

The monster ravaged and crazily harvested the lives of the Turkish people.

This unimaginable scene shocked everyone, even the soldiers from both sides who were fighting in the city stopped and stared dumbfoundedly at the incredible giant creature.

What is this creature with eight tentacles?

Confusion filled Charlotte's mind.

Suddenly, she remembered the pendant on her chest!

The girl hurriedly took out the pendant with the eight-winged angel engraved on it from her chest.

On the small piece of metal, a man with eight wings was carved. However, the wings behind the man were not shaped like bird feathers, but pointed and covered in round scales... just like the suckers on the tentacles of the creature in front of her. What was even more important was that there was a radiant eye engraved on the Greek-style robe worn by the "angel"!Indeed!

Kind angel, so you did hear my prayer!

Realizing this, a glimmer of enlightenment flashed in Charlotte's eyes.

The girl raised her long sword high and declared boldly,

"This is the miracle of the eight-winged angel! It is the messenger that God sent to help us, knights! The time to defend our faith has come, follow me and slay the enemies! Hallelujah!"

The knights, as if awakened from a dream, instantly rallied and their morale skyrocketed. They shouted slogans and launched a fierce counterattack against the enemy.

"Hallelujah!"

Caught off guard, the Turks were defeated by the knights and forced to retreat.

The tide of battle had turned!

.......

Standing among the ruins of the city walls, Charlotte felt a sense of survival after disaster in her heart.

Originally, she had already prepared herself for death at the moment the walls collapsed. And she had been wielding her sword with the conviction of sacrificing herself.

But she never expected that a miracle would occur.

Looking at the knights escorting Turkish prisoners walking on the street, Charlotte felt a sense of unreality.

At this moment, the Knights Hospitalers had regained control of the city, and most of the invading enemy had been eliminated or surrendered. Only a few remain, still putting up sporadic resistance.

"It's really great... Angel... you heard my prayer..."

"Both the Knights and the people of Rhode Island survived this calamity... It's really wonderful..."

Tears streamed down the girl's cheeks.

"Wuwu... When did I become so fragile... No, I can't cry..."

Charlotte hurriedly wiped away her tears, not wanting her subordinates to see her weakness.

But the tears couldn't be controlled and continued to flow from her eyes.

"Captain."

At some point, some knights had already gathered around Charlotte.

After nearly a week of fierce fighting, more than half of the three hundred knights stationed on Rhode Island had been killed or injured. The only ones remaining who could still move and fight were the few dozen soldiers standing in front of the girl.

"We have won."

To Charlotte's surprise, she noticed that the eyes of these heroic men were somewhat moist.

"Yes, we have won!"

After receiving the affirmation from their Captain, some knights couldn't restrain their emotions and burst into tears, whether it be sadness or joy.

Days of battle, comrades lost, the threat of artillery... too many emotions had been suppressed in the hearts of these knights.

Now, the seventy-thousand Turkish army had been annihilated under the blows of the "eight-winged angel," and the shadow that had shrouded Rhode Island for so long had finally dissipated.

The Knights Hospitalers felt as if a weight of a thousand pounds had been lifted off their shoulders.

"We have won!"

"We have won!"

......

While the knights cried, immersed in the joy of surviving the disaster,

A heavy footstep sounded from the ground.

It turned out to be the massive "eight-winged angel" approaching the city walls of Rhodes.

In front of the collapsed ruins, the "eight-winged angel" stopped, using its giant golden eyes to gaze at Charlotte and her knights with great interest.

Then, the angel extended one of its tentacles towards Charlotte.

"Captain, be careful!"

Although all the knights were familiar with the legend of the "eight-winged angel," they were not as certain as their captain that the creature before them was the one that saved the knights and civilians in the Holy City.

"Don't be afraid, the angel won't harm us."

Charlotte reached out to stop her subordinates from advancing and took a few steps forward alone, boldly gazing into the eyes of the "angel."

The "eight-winged angel" dropped a nearly lifeless figure from its tentacle.

Charlotte approached and found that the person was none other than Meshi Pasha, the commander of the seventy-thousand Turkish army!

By now, Meshi Pasha's body had been disfigured, foam pouring out of his mouth as he mumbled incoherent words like "tentacles! Tentacle monsters are coming!" and "cannons are flying from the sky." It was clear that this Turkish leader had suffered a great mental shock."I think this person will be useful to you," the angel spoke. It was a gentle and kind male voice, like the winter sunlight, bringing warmth to one's heart.

The angel's voice, as refreshing as a spring breeze, gradually calmed the emotions of the knights. Everyone felt their souls being purified, all the negative emotions accumulated from the previous war and killings vanishing.

Finally, the knights were astonished to find that their wounds from days of battling miraculously healed. With this, the knights completely dispelled their doubts and firmly believed that the giant being before their eyes with golden eyes was the "Eight-Winged Angel" as recorded in the historical records of their Order.

Of course, the most excited was the Grand Commander, Charlotte - the girl disguised as a boy.

"Grandpa... you were right... the Angel has come to save us..." The girl could no longer restrain the emotions in her heart, and tears streamed down her face.

Just then, the "Angel" spoke again.

"All the Turks on the mountain have been disarmed and surrendered to me. You need to quickly send someone to take over... Oh, and one more thing..."

The eyes of the "Eight-Winged Angel" suddenly became blurry.

A man with golden hair emerged from the angel's eyes.

He was a man as bright as the sun, with a face as grand and handsome as the Greek gods depicted in sculptures. He appeared to be around twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old, but the amber-colored eyes shining with wisdom reflected the brilliance possessed only by those who had experienced long years.

The man was dressed in an ancient Greek-style robe, wearing a radiant smile like sunshine. He walked slowly towards Charlotte through the air.

"May I ask, which one of you is the Commander of the Hospital Knights?" The man's voice remained gentle.

Charlotte stared blankly at the dazzling man before her, now more convinced than ever that this man had been the angel who had always protected her throughout the years.

"Angel... sir..." Charlotte gazed at the man's smiling face, feeling as if an electric current had surged into her heart from her eyes. She felt that the man before her became more and more handsome.

"If only I could lean on the chest of the Angel, how happy it would be." The girl was amazed to find such a crazy and blasphemous thought taking root in her heart!

Charlotte quickly suppressed the various thoughts in her mind and solemnly knelt on one knee.

"Reporting to the Angel, I am Charlotte de Villare, the current Grand Commander of the Hospital Order of St. John in Jerusalem and Rhodes."

"So the Commander is no longer Nelson." The "Angel" shook his head nostalgically. "Ah, the lifespan of humans is really short."

The presence of the Angel having met the previous Grand Commander two hundred years ago? The knights became even more convinced of the story they had heard since childhood. Charlotte also perked up her ears, respectfully waiting to hear the next "divine revelation" from the Angel.

"So... do you have salted fish?" Charlotte couldn't believe her ears.

Salted fish? The Angel wants salted fish?

No, no... I must be too tired... that's why I'm having hallucinations...

"Angel... what did you just say?" Charlotte asked in disbelief.

"No need to call me 'sir'... " The Angel continued to smile kindly, "Do you have salted fish?"

As he spoke, the Angel took out a crumpled sheepskin parchment from his Greek-style robe.

"This is the agreement between you, Commander Nelson, and me. It states that your Hospital Order is to pay me a certain tribute every year. Now I request that you provide salted fish as tribute to me..."

Salted fish... it really is salted fish...

Charlotte felt everything spinning, and the exhaustion from the days of battles spread from every nerve ending in her body to her mind.

Then, everything went black, and Charlotte fell backward, unconscious, in front of the "Angel.""Captain!"

The knights behind the young girl exclaimed in alarm.

The angel quickly embraced Charlotte's body.

"Hey, Chief Lochach, what happened to you?"
