Chapter 14 Heavy Cold
update icon Updated at 2023/7/22 11:10:12

"I won't die, don't worry. The old lady next door gave me a fortune reading." I said to her with a smile, despite having a bad cold.

It has been two days since I came back from shopping in Night Fall Town. The biggest realization I had during these two days is that carpentry is indeed a skilled trade. Why do I say that? Because I dismantled Mr. Park's perfectly built roof eaves...

The reason is simple, though. While it could effectively prevent rainwater from dripping down, the eaves are flat and the hole is round, which could obstruct her movement if stuffed into the hole. So, I had to make modifications.

The process of renovation was challenging. I had to dismantle each long wooden board and fix it along the curvature of the hole, nailing it piece by piece... If anyone wants their hands to become rough several times over in just a few hours, I recommend trying carpentry.

There was also a problem with fixing. Although I followed Wolfrang's advice, it was still extremely difficult in practice. It's like making a model of a small wooden house using toothpicks may be easy, but building an actual small house with a pile of wood requires real skills. Without the skills, relying solely on imagination, the final product would end up messy, just like the eaves I made.

But even if the finished product looks ugly, at least it serves its purpose. Plus, it has the additional function of hanging clothes, which can be considered a kind of success.

Oh, by the way, Medusa helped a lot during the entire process, although I didn't want her to get involved. After all, I'm not the kind of person who wants their woman's delicate hands to become rough.

As for the doorstep, I managed to solve it by using the leftover wood from tree-cutting and some fur. Now, if it rains, there won't be severe water accumulation in the hole.

While doing carpentry, I also considered the changes in weather. If I had arrived in the summer, after a month, it's very likely that the season would have transitioned to autumn with the rain. The best proof was that if I slept without a shirt, I could clearly feel the morning chill.

Unfortunately, I was foolish and didn't think it was a big deal to transition into autumn. Just like the older generation used to tell us, "Now you can rest, but when you get old, all the illnesses will come."

This time, before I even had a chance to get old, the illness had already found its way to me.

The strange feeling started that morning when I woke up. The first movement of my body sent a dull pain through every joint to my brain. Then I realized that my brain's perception of pain wasn't as clear anymore; instead, there was a heavy, extremely weak feeling.

It wasn't merely a feeling of fatigue, it was genuine fatigue. Even when I supported myself to sit up straight, it felt like I had used all of my strength.

"Ah... Is it a cold after all?"

People get sick even when they eat a balanced diet, but that was in the past. Now, I don't carry quick-acting medicines like Contac with me, so the thing I fear the most here is catching a cold and getting a fever. It's terrifying how just sleeping in a cold environment can disable more than thirty percent of a person's mobility.

Considering that I have been living in this extremely unsanitary cave for over a month, catching a cold is actually considered lucky. If I accidentally contracted tetanus at that time, I might not have survived until now.

I mustered up the energy to open my eyes and decided to get out of bed. I could tough it out with this cold; it's not like lying in bed all day is an option for a grown man. Besides, there are things to do today.

Wrapping myself in a fur, I walked outside the cave and looked at the "yam" I had just planted a few days ago. I felt a surge of energy in my body. If I was to grow something, it would need to be watered, but for now, the only container I have is the pot I just bought.

I wish I had bought another wooden basin, this iron pot is quite heavy. I went to the cold stream in the northwest direction and carried water back, feeling the pain from the freezing water even when I dipped my hand in it.

Sigh, I really wonder what my friends would think if they saw me like this.

"Good morning."

"Mhm, good morning."

She too was wearing a fur, standing at the entrance of the cave. With a little refinement, she had the aura of a wealthy young lady.

"What are you doing?"

"Oh, these things need water."

"Ah~ Are you going to read today?""Well, I'll be right there... Ah-choo!"

"Pfft."

As expected, it was a cold. My nose was stuffy. Anyway, let me smoke a cigarette first. I still had to go with her to see those new books we bought. My mind was feeling foggy and drowsy, not in a good state.

Sitting on the bed, we opened the book together. It was still those strange characters that I couldn't understand at all. I had researched the writing systems of this world before out of boredom. There were a total of 19 characters, with a main structure of straight lines. The printed characters looked exceptionally neat. But the punctuation marks were very peculiar, especially some small circle symbols that were quite confusing. It would probably be difficult for me to learn grammar and such in the future, given my understanding abilities.

Other observations about the language were that the word structures in this world were basically the same as English. What are the characteristics of English? Well, generally, one letter does not represent a whole word. For example, the Chinese character for "cow" is just one character "牛", but in English, "cow" is composed of three letters. In terms of this feature, English was indeed a relatively easy language to learn.

But at that time, I hadn't thought about those things yet. I was simply learning by following the pictures in the book. If there was a picture of a bird, I would ask her how to say "bird". If there was a picture of a house, I would ask her how to say "house". However, the new book we bought this time had a picture of a man and a woman in what looked like a garden, with their foreheads touching and expressions of happiness on their faces.

Even if I had a bad cold and my mind was hazy, I could still tell that these two people were clearly getting married. The man was wearing a suit and the woman was wearing a wedding dress. It couldn't be a funeral, right?

I took a while to think, but with my brain becoming increasingly dizzy, I didn't ask any questions about the picture.

Lost in my thoughts, I recalled my parents who had always placed great importance on marriage, as well as those sarcastic sayings about marriage...

"What's wrong?"

"Ah? Uh, it's nothing, nothing... So, what... what is this?"

She shook my arm and I finally snapped out of it. However, the piercing cold and my sluggish thinking made my sentence come out incoherent.

"Hehe, this is Westrianna."

"Oh... Oh..."

She seemed to be waiting for me to ask about the picture, happily telling me the pronunciation of "wedding" in her language. I did my best to remember, but unfortunately, my hand holding the pen was no longer cooperating. However, I could still maintain my sitting posture for a while longer.

"Come on~"

"What's wrong?"

"Let's do this, the thing in the picture."

With bright eyes and slightly parted lips, she made a request that I couldn't refuse. She pointed to the wedding picture and then grabbed my arm.

I almost couldn't keep my balance, but I managed to stand up. Inside our little cave, we recreated the pose of the man and woman in the picture, with our foreheads pressed together and our clasped hands touching each other. At this point, I could no longer hold on, but I still wanted to fulfill her small wish.

As long as you can feel happy, in the future, we will have a real wedding in the place depicted in the picture.

Her forehead transmitted a cold warmth to me, but I felt many dark spots in my vision and had trouble seeing her face clearly.

"I'm sorry..."

"What's wrong?"

"I feel... so cold..."

In that moment of falling down, I tried to grab her hand, but I remember I didn't manage to.

This was the second time in my life that I fainted. The last time was due to a sudden bout of dysentery, fainting in the restroom. This time, I fainted in the arms of the beautiful Medusa, which wasn't too embarrassing, I suppose.

When I opened my eyes, the familiar face displayed a complex expression. The feeling of her fingers confirmed that I was still alive. It felt good. In the past, I didn't want to die because of my instinct for survival, but now it was because I wanted to see her smiling face again. Indeed, one cannot be alone for their whole life.

"You won't die... Right?"

From the slightly lowered eyebrows, I could tell she was worried about me. A newlywed couple secretly holding a wedding ceremony, the groom suddenly fainting was indeed quite scary.

"I won't die, don't worry. The old lady next door told me my fortune."

I said with a smile in Chinese, but she clearly didn't understand.

"I'm fine-"

I repeated in the language of this world, tapping her forehead lightly with mine to show that I really wouldn't die. Then, she hugged me with a speed that I hadn't seen in a long time, like a flash of light.

When you are sick, if there is someone beside you worrying about you, that is enough to feel happiness.
