Chapter 33: Festive Fireworks
update icon Updated at 2023/8/12 3:10:12

I often wish time would stop on a certain day and never pass again. This is not a fantasy, it's just a reminder to cherish the present.

A crowd of people carrying torches sang and arrived at the central square of Night Fall Town, where Mr. Simmon used to strike the bell. In the center of the square was a small tower made of wood and hay.

There was no host or mayor's speech, but people automatically formed a circle, and everything was very orderly.

Wolfrang and a handsome young man walked out of the crowd, each holding an unlit torch. Under the gaze of the crowd, the two torches were plunged into a brazier.

Then there was a brief speech, which I could understand but had a strange sentence structure, similar to ancient Chinese. The gist of the handsome young man's speech was, "On behalf of all the humans in Night Fall Town, I thank the monsters for their continuous support and assistance. May the days ahead be peaceful and happy forever."

The gist of Wolfrang's speech was, "On behalf of all the monsters in Night Fall Town, I thank the humans for their protection and understanding. May there be bountiful harvests and no worries about food and clothing in the future."

These two sentences were definitely written by our ancestors as congratulatory messages. The two raised their torches high and threw them into the wooden tower together. The fire instantly lit up, and the residents, as if rehearsed, walked to the bonfire one by one and placed their torches on top. Park patted my shoulder, indicating that we should do the same.

In fact, this kind of celebration is not in line with the concept of sustainable development. So much wasted wood and the excessive smoke from burning. But for these people who rely on nature for a living, what other way of celebrating do they have?

Using fire to illuminate the darkness is the simplest form of joy for people. Each torch represents every resident of Night Fall Town, which is also a manifestation of their unity. The reason I like this town is because of this atmosphere of stability and unity that doesn't rely on laws and regulations.

"Sainihalara!"

The people in the square cheered, and the sound waves surged one after another, illuminating the small town with a population of less than a thousand.

My wife smiled, and we held hands tightly, confirming that this was not a dream.

After the cheers came a choral song. Mr. Simmon and a few friends set up their instruments, and lively and passionate folk music played. Although we couldn't sing, we waved our hands along with the music, trying to immerse ourselves in this beautiful night.

Then, my wife and I were separated.

Although I knew it wasn't malicious, I was somewhat surprised. What's more, she was taken away by that succubus, Leya. I have no idea what will happen between the two of them.

Wolfrang changed me into a nice suit. I couldn't remember the last time I wore a suit. Looking at myself in the mirror, I felt a sense of nostalgia. The shoes were a bit uncomfortable, and the collar was a bit tight, but I was still satisfied with this outfit. I never expected that I could look so handsome in this world.

"Wolfrang, what is this?"

"A gift for you... "

"Ah, thank you very much."

"Hehe, it's nothing special. Because you are... special."

"What do you mean?"

"It's been a long time since humans and monsters have been together like this."

"Is that so..."

"Alright, look, you little gentleman!"

I was surprised at how Wolfrang held the comb with his wolf claws and styled my hair. And the result was surprisingly good...

"Mrs. Raul needs some more time, please wait."

"Okay."

After smoking a cigarette with Wolfrang, we returned to the square. By this time, people in the square had begun to dance freely around the bonfire. There were couples, married couples, and children. The elderly who weren't dancing drank some wine they didn't know when they had gotten, all while chatting and laughing. And in the distance, I saw two people with auras.

"Woohoo~ Leya looks just like before."

"What?"

Wolfrang was taller than me, so he definitely saw something. I could vaguely make out that it was my wife and Leya. She's getting closer, my beloved. Her shoulder-length brown hair exudes the sweet aroma of chocolate. She wears a strapless black gown that cinches at her slender waist. The dress stops just at her hips, with tassels adorned with gold and silver fragments swaying on the shimmering scales.

Every breath tightens my collar, until I can barely swallow...

My wife approaches me, making a seductive move - she gently tucks her hair behind her ear. The dazzling earring shines brilliantly on her earlobe.

No man could resist such a naked visual temptation, unless he's gay. My mind is filled with words of flattery I want to say to her, for everyone to hear.

But, as I am about to speak, it comes out as...

"Where's the snake?"

Clutching at my hair, I let out this question.

I didn't mean to ask, but my wife's hair is now devoid of those cute little snakes!

"Huh?!"

Medusa freezes, the werewolf shakes his head, and the succubus immediately loses her smug expression.

"Mr. Raul... um..."

Wolfrang covers his face with his paw, letting out a sound of resignation.

No, let's be reasonable here. You took away my wife's snakes, it's like chopping off someone's ten fingers!

My wife looks at Leya, who waves her hand as if to say, "I don't want to deal with you silly couple anymore."

"Um... what about this?"

The little snakes slowly crawl out of her hair, their heads cleverly twisting around, occasionally sticking out their tongues.

My adorable little snakes are back! That's great!

Uh... this sounds as if Medusa was NTRed by her own snakes inside her hair. What I want to say is, you don't need to dress up like a human, I don't love you for your appearance.

"You look beautiful."

"Really?"

"Absolutely."

Embracing her, I feel a sense of relief from the people around us.

Why are you relieved? It should be me who's relieved!

"Mr. Raul, you... never mind."

Wolfrang pats my shoulder and walks away helplessly.

Park points at me, forming a hammer shape with his hand and knocks on his own head twice...

Are you saying I'm crazy?

Leya says nothing, sighs heavily in front of me, and sympathetically pats my wife's shoulder...

I'm not really that clueless, it's just that I couldn't react in time.

Then my wife and I try to dance, which is quite easy for Medusa, as she doesn't need precise steps. Using the little ballroom dance I learned in high school, I manage to do a couple of moves.

"Aren't you cold?"

While dancing, I notice that her dress is backless.

"I'm not."

Resting my hand on her smooth back and keeping it still is quite challenging.

Perhaps it's because of the warmth of the bonfire or her attire, after a series of chaotic dancing, I feel a burning sensation all over. As she sways her tail along with my steps, love fills her eyes.

Loosening my collar, I decide to take a break.

Leya and Wolfrang start dancing, but it's more like "flying." With Leya's wings to maintain balance in the air and Wolfrang's strong arms, they effortlessly perform acrobatic moves with difficulty ratings of 8.8, such as Leya pulling Wolfrang's hand and spinning a full circle in the air.

Park chats with a group of middle-aged men while sipping drinks, while Simmon dutifully plays an instrument similar to a flute.

Just as my wife is about to fall asleep leaning against me, Park sets off fireworks. These fireworks are nowhere near as spectacular as the ones I've seen during Chinese New Year, with only shades of blue and orange, their sparks a bit lackluster. However, for the enthusiastic crowd in the square, it's enough. I suppose this is Park's masterpiece.Looking at the not-so-spectacular fireworks, I am surprisingly happy. Here, I don't have the same mentality as when I used to travel. I used to observe, record, analyze, and transform what I saw and heard into usable knowledge. But after nearly a hundred days of living here, my attitude has changed. The monsters are not as terrifying as I imagined, and not all humans are as cunning and ruthless as I subjectively judged them to be. Ultimately, this world is likely where I will spend the rest of my life. Instead of being constantly on guard and living a dull life, why not integrate into this wonderful world?

Moreover, I have already found my other half here.

Oh, by the way, speaking of the nearly hundred days of living here, I just realized that today is the 100th day anniversary of my encounter with Medusa.
