Chapter 11: Night Battle

"A vampire without a religious background is not as elegant." - Records on vampires in another world

When Xiaoga joined our journey, I also considered his combat capabilities. With the corrosive abilities of his scavenger form, he could potentially play an unexpected role in future conflicts.

But I didn't expect the battle to come so soon.

It took quite some time to bypass the scavenger territory, and night was approaching. The setting sun transformed into several walls of light between the gaps in the trees, reminding us to be prepared for the dark forest. However, what currently caught my attention was the mini palace in this open space.

The large open space in the forest was almost certainly man-made, and the small pyramidal structure confirmed my suspicions. Leaving my wife to guard the cart, I quickly inspected the building while the sun had not yet completely disappeared, hoping to find humans or remnants of human resources.

The building was constructed of stone bricks, different from the roughness of Night Fall Town. Each brick was exactly the same size and clearly polished. And the reason why it was called a "pyramidal" structure was that three rectangular houses without doors were stacked like a pyramid. One point that didn't make sense if this was a man-made house was that the two rooms on the ground floor had empty bottoms.

In other words, the two rooms below couldn't be entered; stepping inside would cause one to fall into a bottomless square hole.

This strange building was more like a "lid" placed on top of the hole rather than a house.

And the top floor room was completely meaningless. There were no stairs or ladders, just an empty stone room. However, this building had eaves and some relief carvings, so from a distance, it looked like a small palace.

I considered all possibilities, but none of them could explain the purpose of this combination-styled stone structure.

The two rooms below lead to the hole but had no ladder, making them unsuitable for habitation or storage. The upper room, although usable, seemed more like a decoration. There were no traces of human habitation in these three empty rooms, so I had to shift my focus to the monsters...

Looking at the pitch-black rectangular space, I refrained from shouting inside. If there were monsters living underground, it would naturally give off a frightening and aggressive impression.

It would be best to stay away from this haunted house, sleep through the night, and leave early tomorrow.

Returning to the cart, my wife and I set up the tent in a corner of the open space to prepare for the night.

...

The strange noises began around 9 o'clock in the evening. Although I was becoming increasingly drowsy, I could still hear the sound of tree trunks shaking. My wife reacted quickly and instantly nocked an arrow on her bow, lifting the curtain of the tent. I strapped the rifle to my back and held the lantern in my left hand as I followed my wife outside.

The gray moonlight cast a reflection on the ground, resembling the skin of a dead person. The sound of peeling bark and snapping branches echoed in the surroundings, and the light from the lantern was insignificant. I leaned on my wife's shoulder, unsure which direction to aim the revolver, as I couldn't see where the so-called enemy was.

"Magic arrow!"

"Where?"

My wife launched a fast attack, and it was evident that the monster was trying to attack our cattle first. After this attack, the appearance of the monster was finally exposed within the lantern's illumination range. It was an indescribable creature, with a human-like body adorned with enormous wings much larger than those of a succubus. With slender limbs, a gray body, and incredibly smooth skin, it barely adhered to human proportions, but its naked body made it difficult to discern its gender. Apart from the wings, the biggest difference from humans were its mouth filled with sharp teeth and its elongated, backward-leaning ears.

This was completely different from what was recorded in books! At least they didn't draw wings!

It was certain that there were still several more of these monsters in the vicinity, but since the one that had launched the first attack had been shot through the head and pinned to a tree, the others didn't dare to advance. The monster had strong vitality; even with a pierced forehead, it continued to struggle, and black blood dripped into the gaps in its twisted wrinkles along its face. Its grotesque mouth continuously emitted screams that tore at one's heart and dirty blood mixed with saliva.

"We don't want to fight you! Do you understand?"

"Ssss!"

These monsters probably couldn't speak, as could be seen from the struggle of the one pinned to the tree. They were more like reserving their bestial nature. Well, there was nothing to say then; it was time to draw our weapons.

Little Ao cautiously protruded half of his body from the tent, looking left and right. In this high-speed, high-intensity battle, the little guy probably wouldn't be of much use.

"Xiao Ao, go back."

"Husband, three on the right, three on the left."

"Okay, be careful, wife."

The number of monsters was about the same as imagined. Perhaps the screams of their comrades made the monsters lose their calmness. Another one dived down from a tree on the right, targeting me this time.

I said, don't send them one by one in a team, but no one listened!

This monster made a big mistake, attacking against the moonlight. Its bat-like huge wings were clearly visible under the moonlight. I remained surprisingly calm and hit both shots. The first shot hit its arm, and the second shot hit its throat accidentally but precisely. I felt no pride in my accurate marksmanship when the monster fell to the ground, clutching its bleeding throat, less than a meter away from me.

The monster crouched on the ground, unable to stop the loss of blood. In less than a minute, it turned into a quiet corpse lying on the black carpet. The one nailed to the tree was still struggling as it didn't lose much blood. I kicked the body on the ground, and it was obvious that a large piece of flesh was missing from its neck. The power of this revolver was unexpectedly strong.

But it made sense when I thought about it. After all, when I fired the second shot, the monster was almost at the muzzle.

After these two shots, the monsters clearly became afraid and kept a distance from us. However, this cannot go on. These monsters can stay awake all the time, but my wife and I cannot. If we continue like this, we will inevitably be found a weakness. Should I consider having my wife use petrifaction magic to deal with them...

"What scary guests~"

A ethereal female voice came from the small palace, and several bat-like creatures flew out of the room sporadically.

My wife immediately aimed the arrow in the direction of the voice and chanted the magic arrow again, while I continued to be vigilant of the monsters around. My intuition told me that the upcoming thing was definitely a formidable enemy.

"Who are you? Stupid people from the kingdom? Or boring humans?"

"We are a traveling couple."

"Oh~ Humans and monsters can be a couple too?"

"What's wrong with it? We have rings."

"Rings? I have a lot of them too!"

My wife shot the arrow because there was an object in the building obviously moving towards us at a very high speed.

"Be careful, husband!"

"Uh!"

All I could do was to use my left hand holding the lantern as support, aim the gun at the most dangerous direction, and place the gun in position.

There was nothing my wife couldn't handle with a single arrow in the world. If not, then two arrows.

But this enchanting blonde girl clearly didn't buy it.

The muzzle of the gun was pressed against the cleavage area of her body that was called "career line". Her delicate, doll-like body fearlessly blocked the path of the large-caliber lead bullets. I pulled the trigger with the quickest response.

However, the woman acted as if nothing had happened. She pulled out the arrow that pierced her palm while touching the hole in her chest. Neither the arrow nor the bullet left even a drop of blood.

This, indeed, was a monster.

"The gun is quite nice."

"So, can I eat you now, human sir?"

The monster girl pushed up my chin with her hand, exposing my throat, the most vulnerable part of a human body, just like the monsters. It was exposed to teeth that I didn't know were sharp or not.

For the first time, I understood what it felt like when the thinking speed of my brain couldn't catch up with the changing speed of things around me.

The cold back of a knife pressed against my neck, and the blade got stuck in the mouth corner of the female monster who seemed to be a vampire. My wife used her hatchet to prevent my veins from being pierced by the teeth.

"Get away from my husband."

Medusa said word by word.

"What if I don't?"

The blonde beauty held onto the blade of the knife and answered with a coquettish smile.

"Well...that's hard to say."

Medusa raised her other hand and a short-handled axe appeared in it, I didn't know when she grabbed it.

I saw the ring on my wife's middle finger, and the blood-red bead seemed to foreshadow what would happen next.

"I don't want to fight Medusa today~"

The blonde woman's lips left the blade, and my wife immediately used the back of the knife to block my throat, signaling me to retreat. I also got a clear look at what this monster, who could withstand a magic-accelerated arrow and a point-blank shot, really was.

"Your husband looks delicious~"

"Oh really? But you certainly look very delicious."

"No one has ever tasted me~"

"Who knows?"

Conversations between female monsters are generally like a needle against the grain. I don't know how my wife gets along so well with Leya...

"I must say, just a human. Let me have a taste."

The sexy outfit on the blonde woman seems to be adorned with a kilogram of precious metals and gemstones. Her curvy figure and the provocative lingerie-like attire exude the scent of a high-class courtesan. Unsure if she should be called a vampire or not, the female monster with crimson lips reveals a standard smile, showcasing eight neatly arranged triangular teeth.
