Chapter 58 Anniversary

"When I got to know her for a full 365 days, I realized how quickly time had passed." - The diary was old and worn, but our relationship remained fresh.

We stayed in the bride's nest for two days, filled with a strange and colorful atmosphere. The cave was covered in cobwebs, impossible to illuminate with flames. The big spider that emitted a cold light from its belly became our chandelier. My wife didn't like the cold, but compared to the annoying drizzle outside, at least it was dry here. Food was always a topic for us as a couple, and now with an extra mouth to feed, it was hard to guarantee a full stomach every day just by hunting.

Our clothes were already filthy, especially after being drenched in rain, they were full of moldy smell.

"Darling, how many more days do you think it will rain?"

"It would be best if it's sunny tomorrow."

"That's not very likely..."

The southern plains during the rainy season had its charm. I imagined walking hand in hand with my beloved wife in the drizzling rain, almost like a scene from a teenage manga. However, life was different from works of art. If we were to take a stroll in the rain, we would have to spend a lot of time cleaning our muddy tails when we came back, an activity both of us were too lazy to do.

In the midst of our conversation, the bride emerged from the cave and looked at the rain outside, sighing. Seeing the two of us sitting at the entrance of the cave, she asked, "What's wrong? Don't feel like going hunting?"

"It's raining."

The bride could tell that my wife didn't like rainy days, so she didn't say anything and sat with us.

"I'll go hunting."

"Husband, you can't use your gun in the rain, right?"

"Oh... right, I forgot."

Although this revolver was ignited by percussion caps, the damp air in the rain could cause the propellant made of blasting stones to burn incompletely. If only there was magic, many things would be easily solved. In my boredom, I flipped open the diary and read the dates page by page. One, two, three... three hundred and fifty-four, three hundred and fifty-five.

Today is the three hundred and fifty-sixth day.

According to reason, our one-year anniversary should be a joyous occasion, something to celebrate. But I couldn't bring myself to be happy. The drizzling rain dampened the entire sky, making it hard to breathe. I looked at my wife and the bride, and we all instinctively continued to gaze up at the gray sky.

Time flies, it has been a year...

If only there was a movie theater here, if only there was a Western restaurant, if only there was a pedestrian street like the one in Harbin... If only...

"Honey, I want to buy this!"

"Sure, I'll use my credit card."

"Honey, I want to eat at this place."

"Ok, let's eat here then."

"I want to watch this movie, come watch it with me!"

"No problem, I'll buy the tickets."

"Raul, I'm very happy today, thank you."

"As long as you're happy. Let me walk you home."

A young couple stopped at the entrance of their housing community, each wrapped up in their own thoughts of love. Finally, their eyes met, and the girl left a kiss on the boy's face. The boy stood there in a daze, watching his beloved girl walk back to the door, and then turned and smiled.

This scene should be accompanied by cherry blossoms falling all over the screen.

...

Enough daydreaming, it's time to focus.

"Have the kingdom's army ever come here before?" I started the conversation, though it was a serious topic, my tone was absent-minded.

"The kingdom's army... I've lost count how many times they've come." The bride raised her eyebrows and scratched the ground with her hind legs, leaving white marks resembling her own portrait. I listened quietly as the bride explained how she defeated those humans who came to cause trouble for her.

The ones who came to provoke the bride were usually the border guards. I was familiar with this unit, as they were the ones causing havoc in Night Fall Town. The border guards were mostly desperate people who couldn't survive in the kingdom. Naturally, the task of dealing with "dirty work" like monsters fell to them. Although the border guards were unreliable people, they were more familiar with monsters than the kingdom's regular army, and they had a wilder approach.

Apart from the border guards, there was another type of person in the kingdom, they could be loosely called adventurers. The southern plains held countless magical materials, and the goal of these adventurers was to find these treasures and hand them over to the kingdom in exchange for money and fame. In this process, they inevitably encountered various monsters and faced high risks. That's why they often formed teams of three to five people, with half-baked magicians who knew magic, hunters skilled in using guns, and seasoned wanderers with extensive knowledge. The five that my wife and I had killed before were adventurers.

The appearance of adventurers actually stemmed from the decline of the black market, which is not difficult to understand. After all, the vast Southern Plains was a big cake that the black market in Night Fall Town couldn't finish eating.

The lair of the Weaving Bride was quite famous within the kingdom's adventurer circle. So much so that the adventurers even gave her a code name, "The Invisible Reaper". Countless adventurers, even the border guards, were captured by her with her spider silk. As I listened, I wondered why no one had thought of burning the cave down with fire?

"They've already tried once..."

As the Weaving Bride spoke, a look of hatred flashed across her face. I could imagine the fierce fire and thick smoke in that cave, where everything would fight against each other. Though spider silk was a powerful material, it was not fire resistant and easily burned. The only way the Weaving Bride could prevent the fire from spreading was by cleaning up all the spider silk that hadn't burned and slowly repairing it afterwards. Even someone with the best temperament would not be able to greet the border guards and adventurers with a smile every time they were harassed. The Weaving Bride's personality became increasingly cruel, to the point where even the black market couldn't trade with her face-to-face.

Why do humans have to fight monster soldiers? Because monsters really do pose a threat to humans. I cannot consider the question from my own perspective, as most residents in the kingdom probably view monsters as evil beings...

Looking at my wife with her human body and snake tail, I suddenly felt mixed emotions. How should humans and monsters coexist?

"Darling? The rain has stopped."

"Mmm..."

"Darling? What are you thinking about?"

"Ah, nothing."

"You're lying to me."

"Yes, I am lying to you."

Seeing the look in my wife's eyes, I couldn't come up with any more excuses to continue lying.

"Aren't we supposed to tell each other the truth?"

"I don't know how to say it to you."

Our one-year anniversary, a special holiday that only existed in my world for couples. How should I explain it to Medusa?

As I pondered, the Weaving Bride looked at me, then at my wife, and listened attentively to our conversation. It was evident that she had never witnessed humans and monsters being able to converse like this before.

"Wife, today is very important to us. Based on the customs of my previous life, we should..."

"What should we do?"

"We should go to watch a movie, go shopping for clothes, have a meal at a restaurant, and then I will give you a gift."

I explained my understanding of the one-year anniversary to my wife in Chinese, and she happily nodded as she listened to my foreign language.

"Sounds good."

Medusa cuddled up to me happily, as if she could understand Chinese. Tears welled up in my eyes - tears that represented emotions such as sadness and touched me, accompanied by a tight throat and a faint sting in my nose.

I didn't know why I was crying that day. This woman by my side had dedicated so much to me, yet I couldn't even produce a small gift to express my feelings.

"Don't cry, darling~"

"Okay, I won't cry. Let's go hunting."

Holding my wife's hand, we braved the rain and went outside. The Weaving Bride followed us.

"I will come too~"

"You're coming too? I thought you would never leave your little cave."

My wife said teasingly.

"Hmph, I just didn't want to come out. If it's about hunting, I'm much better than you."

I also thought the Weaving Bride wouldn't come out of the cave, but she tied the long skirt that was dragging on the ground at knee height, revealing her fair legs. Although her feet were bigger than mine, they looked somewhat fresh when stepping on the ground.

On our one-year anniversary, we couldn't go to a Michelin-starred restaurant for dinner, so we went on a large-scale hunt in the drizzle instead. Soon, various animals of all sizes were scattered on the ground. The Weaving Bride's hunting method could be described as dazzling. With her four black and sturdy limbs, she could spray spider silk like Spider-Man, dancing among the trees. Birds hiding from the rain in the trees were wrapped up like cocoons and thrown under the trees one by one.

My wife was not to be outdone, eagerly searching for any animals that dared to show themselves on the ground.

When we returned to the cave entrance, the hunting spoils had piled up into a small mountain.

After starting a bonfire, the barbecue party began. Although the new monster bride was afraid of fire, it wasn't very dangerous by the entrance of the cave. She sat with us and the fierce spider witch tried human chewing for the first time, and for the first time, her stomach was captured by a chaotic barbecue.

Clearly, I hadn't been drinking, but my eyes were blurry.

Since there was no cinema, I sang a few impressive songs to the two monster mothers and even persuaded my wife to join me for a dancing session.

At that time, we didn't realize that that rainy night was the last time our eyes met with love.

My wife and I went to bed early that night, and our first anniversary ended without much excitement. I don't know what subtle changes occurred in the new monster bride after meeting the two of us, but she certainly changed. The next day, the new monster bride stood with a smile, hands behind her back, inviting us to guess what she was holding. It was the first time I saw her smile; it turns out this deathly monster could also reveal a shining smile like a star.

"Here, this is for you! You're welcome~"

"What's this?"

The new monster bride held a snow-white suit in one hand, clearly for me, and a short dress in the other hand for my wife. At first glance, I decided that these two creations by the new monster bride would become our wedding attire.

Just as I imagined, when I gently touched the clothes, it felt like I was about to touch a magical liquid. They were woven from spider silk, light as a leaf, and felt smooth like my wife's skin. We folded the clothes neatly and put them at the bottom of our luggage. We made a promise to the new monster bride that we would let her see the scene of us wearing the new clothes for our wedding.

The new monster bride didn't say much; she assured us that she had a plan, and there was no need to worry. Instead, it was us, the human and monster couple, who had to be cautious of the powerful Kingdom Inslay's magician.

"You two, survive, alright?"

I didn't understand why the new monster bride blessed us with such an ominous phrase, but in the end, it proved her words were reasonable. We had underestimated the power of the Kingdom Inslay.

Much later, when I returned to the empty cave of the new monster bride, I saw that she had carved a childish drawing on the ground at the entrance. It depicted Medusa, me, and her holding hands, walking in the rain. Although the carving was poorly done, the little person behind had four extra lines and a smiling face.
