Chapter 4: Life Goes On
update icon Updated at 2025/4/9 5:10:12

Due to the decision of the people in Night Fall Town to fight to the end, a large amount of food had been exchanged for other resources when running the black market, and only the minimum amount of cattle and sheep were kept.

Looking at the ranch that had already been reduced by two-thirds and reinforced with stacked wooden fences, I felt a sense of sadness. My wife and I could leave and start anew, but what about the fate of this town? The vast oat fields, which were on the verge of harvest, would they still sway in the wind like they do now in a week, a month from now?

It's uncomfortable, even though life goes on, it's very uncomfortable.

It feels like having a time bomb around my neck, with the decision to detonate in the hands of the kingdom.

Returning home and seeing my wife, whose appetite and belly were growing, my heart tightened again.

It has been over a week since I returned from my journey, and the burden on my shoulders is getting heavier. Breeding giraffes is currently the most difficult task. I learned from Simmon how to make a hunting trap, and the effect is good, but catching them doesn't mean we can raise them.

In the process of dealing with these large rabbits, I gradually learned some of their habits. Giraffes are mainly distributed in the middle section of the Mountain Dotch forest, and the choice of this habitat makes sense. To the south is the territory of the hyenas, and they hunt giraffes more than we do as a couple. To the north is the territory of the Medusa tribe, and the living conditions are equally poor.

But giraffes are wild animals, and raising them is different from raising horses and sheep. Sheep themselves are docile and easy to raise, and domesticated horses have some understanding of human nature after a long period of domestication. Giraffes, on the other hand, have no understanding of human nature at all. The first time I caught a giraffe with a trap, tied its hind legs with a rope, and then released the trap, the animal immediately ran away until it was pulled back by the rope, still kicking the ground with its strong hind legs.

How can we raise them? Do I have to tie each rabbit with a dog leash? Look at the big sheep, even if I don't tie them with a rope, they can't walk more than twenty meters in a day.

"Husband, what are you fussing about every day?"

"Catching rabbits."

"Why don't you just shoot them dead with a gun?"

My wife lay on the bed, eating golden wild fruits as snacks.

"We need to raise these rabbits, just like the people in town raise horses, so we don't have to hunt anymore in the future."

"Oh... but I don't think raising them is a good idea."

"Hmm? Why is that?"

"Because I always feel that hunting is enough, and besides, how can we take the rabbits with us when we leave here?"

"I want the rabbits to come with us too."

"Hahaha, don't make me laugh, how can rabbits listen to you?"

"But you see, those snakes can understand you..."

"That's different, silly husband."

My wife's words made sense. Even if I could raise those giraffes, when we leave here in the future, we won't be able to bring a large group of rabbits with us. But I discovered something, something very interesting - the fanged horses can be used as hunting dogs.

The fanged horse is a very contradictory creature. Normally, carnivorous animals should have claws instead of hooves, but the fanged horse has hooves. And the horse's body structure is not suitable for hunting. The heads of tigers and lions are generally parallel to their bodies, while the neck of a horse is always held high, which is not conducive to launching an attack.

That afternoon, just out of curiosity, I took off the bridle that was on Feather's head. This was a very dangerous move. But Feather was an extraordinary horse, even when fighting against a thunderbird, it wasn't scared and ran away.

Feather seemed grateful that I had released it from its restraints and rubbed its head against mine. Taking a few steps, I looked back at Feather, indicating for it to follow along. And it actually took a step and followed me.

Before being domesticated by humans, the fanged horse should have been a natural hunter, representing agility and ferocity. Apart from not being able to track prey by smell, it was more than capable of dealing with giraffes. Its hunting method may not be as violent and bloody as that of tigers and wolves, but it was a display of strength. The fanged horse's attack method was to charge, collide, and trample. Once the prey fell, it would step on it with its hooves and bite with its open mouth.

In just one afternoon, with Feather's own strength, it brought down three large rabbits.

Previously, I only considered the difficulties of raising fanged horses, their aggressive nature, and their high consumption of meat. But I never considered that if it was Feather, a divine horse, it wouldn't be difficult to raise and could even help us hunt.

A horse makes me feel that there is still an endless world of wonders that I have yet to discover.

My wife's belly has a slight bulge in the front now. She spends her days lying in bed, reading books, eating meat, folding paper, and occasionally shooting a few arrows at the target I made for her when she's bored. Even though she has changed her eyes and only has her left eye left, it doesn't affect her accuracy in archery at all. The magic arrows are still as powerful as before.

She shoots arrows now mostly because I want to watch, I am fascinated by her S-shaped posture when she shoots.

"Wife, how big do you think your belly will get in the future?"

"Hmm... this big?"

She gestured with her hands, exaggerating a bit.

"No, no, if it gets that big, you'll have trouble even moving."

"But you said you would carry me on your back..."

"If it's that big, I'll have to have Wolfrang and Park carry you together."

Just imagine, if her belly had a one-meter diameter egg inside...

"Do you think it's impossible?"

"It's not that I think it's impossible, after all, I've never seen a little Medusa..."

"Little Medusa?"

"Do you remember anything from when you were a child?"

"How would I remember? It's been two hundred years, I've long forgotten."

"Then will you forget about me in the future?"

"Hehe, I don't know, if you're not good to me, I'll forget about you."

"But even if you don't want to forget, there will come a day when I will leave you."

My wife knows what I mean by that, and she remains silent.

"Do you think there is magic in this world that can make humans live longer?"

"There will be."

"Really?"

"If I say there will be, then there will be."

My wife shoots an arrow and hits the crude target I made for her.

"Two hundred years is a short time, isn't it?"

"Yes, it's short. I feel like meeting you happened just yesterday, and now we already have our child."

"Sasa..."

The difference in lifespan is a problem we never dare to face. We have talked about it countless times, only to end up in a melancholic silence. I think of Meihong and Huiyin, although this world doesn't have the immortal Penglai people, Medusa who can live for over five hundred years is already several times the average human lifespan. One day, she will place two paper cranes on my grave and cry her heart out.

"Husband, are you afraid of death?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because if I die, I won't be able to see you again."

"But I'm not afraid."

"Why?"

"Because when I was alive, I had already fulfilled my greatest wish."

"But..."

"If I die before you, at least I won't have to see your lifeless body and be sad anymore. I don't want to be sad anymore."

"Wife, I will be in great pain if you die."

"I want to leave the most painful thing for you to bear. Isn't that mean?"

My wife turns her head back, giving me a sly smile, a smile that is not easygoing at all.

In the end, I didn't answer her question. There are still so many landscapes in this world that we haven't seen. Besides, I'm only in my twenties, and she's only in her two hundreds. Why should we die young? Kliffrey died when he was almost forty, I should at least wait until I'm in my thirties, and die with a bang.

But what I say doesn't matter, the world is the boss of everyone.

The world says I have to die, then I have to die, nothing else matters.

"Oh, by the way, do you find being with me boring now?"

"Huh? Why are you asking me that?"

Even Medusa sometimes can't keep up with my train of thought.

"You used to kick me out before because it was boring, right?"

"Well... I can't really say that. But it does get a little boring sometimes."

"Hehe, so you're not bored now?"

I wrap my arms around her from behind, and she indulges in my body temperature without getting tired of it.

"I already know that this kind of life is not boring."

"What is it then?"

"It's happiness."

"Do you really understand what happiness is?"

"More than you do~"

I laughed. Does my wife really understand what happiness is? She doesn't, and I don't either. I don't think many people do. What is happiness? One of my roommates once told me that he considered "Toradora!" a masterpiece and quoted the first line of the first episode: "There's something in this world that no one has ever seen before. It is gentle and sweet. Maybe if it could be seen, everyone would want to have it. That's why the world hid it, so that it wouldn't be so easy to obtain. But someday, someone will find it. The one who is supposed to find it, will definitely find it."

After I finished my vivid and colorful speech, he sighed and praised, "You spoke really well."

I lit a cigarette and took a puff, bursting into laughter.

"Hahaha, you talk so much, it's exhausting to listen."

"Brother, I don't understand what happiness is. As for me, I don't have a high level of education, I don't speak in a sophisticated manner."

"What is happiness? It's being satisfied!"

"Those who complain about unhappiness are simply not content with their current situation."

What I said that day was wrong, and it was too realistic. Happiness is a word that is difficult to explain clearly with language, and its nature is still unclear. Especially when there is a woman who, after enduring hardships and torture, still insists that she is happy...

But what I said wasn't completely wrong, because if you are not satisfied with your life, then happiness is definitely out of the question.

My wife and I no longer engage in prose-like conversations and start preparing dinner.

"Wife, it's time to eat. What do you want to eat?"

"Teach me how to cook today."

"Okay, I'll teach you how to cook."

"Hehe~"

Gently holding my wife's hand, I slowly use a knife to cut the meat into appropriately sized slices. I decided to give up raising long-necked rabbits because it's really unnecessary. When the time comes for us to leave here, we can just buy a pair of sheep in Night Fall Town. By then, I'll use the two sheep to pull the cart, my wife will hold the child, and the cart will be filled with various crop seeds, dried meat, farming tools, and house-building materials, etc. Then we will find a fertile land near the sea, a paradise, and truly start a new life.

But for a long time after that, the word "happiness" was deleted from our dictionary.

It's not because we are not content with our current situation, nor is it because, like the lines in "Dragon and Tiger," we searched the entire cave and couldn't find that gentle and sweet thing.

For us, happiness is not written with a pen, but rather, it is achieved with a gun, shot with an arrow, and carved with a knife.
