Act 7: It's All About the Genes
update icon Updated at 2023/7/14 14:10:12

The night had descended, bringing the world into silence and darkness. The Gilliast Castle, as always, remained calm. As the residence of the princess, the Gilliast Castle was magnificent, but its grandeur also posed a problem.

There were only a few dozen people in the castle, including the princess herself, maids, chefs, and other staff providing services. Therefore, at night, the majestic castle seemed eerie and ghostly.

In the quiet of the night, a short scream broke the serenity and echoed from the top floor of the castle tower.

"...Are you out of your mind?!" Aya was on the ground in a prostrate position, covering her nose with some pain, with a small footprint on her face.

"You're the crazy one! Who gave you the courage to climb onto my bed?!" Tiran tightly held onto her teddy bear, staring angrily.

"Weren't we just sleeping on the same bed at noon? Why are you flipping out now?!" Aya found it difficult to understand the princess's train of thought.

Tiran's dominance weakened a bit, but she quickly put on a stubborn and unreasonable expression. "I don't care! Either find another room to sleep in or sleep on the floor!"

"A different room..." Aya imagined the dark and empty corridors outside, as well as an empty room with only herself. The thought made her back down immediately.

"Big sis, can I sleep on the couch then?"

"No!"

Five minutes later, Aya had laid out a mat and blanket on the floor and crawled into it dejectedly, covering her head with the blanket. She felt so sad. It would have been fine if she had been sleeping in a cave as usual, but now there was a super soft and comfortable bed right in front of her, and she couldn't sleep on it. It was too cruel!

"Hey, Aya."

After turning off the lights in the room, Tiran lay on her own bed, staring at the ceiling.

"..." Underneath the bed, the white-haired boy wrapped himself in a blanket like a ball and remained silent.

"Are you really mad?" Tiran smirked and rolled to the edge of the bed, poking the balled-up Aya with her hand.

Still no response.

"Aya, if you don't speak, I'll kick you out."

The bundle of blankets trembled, but there was still no response. Just as Tiran thought that Aya would stubbornly hold on, the boy slowly lifted his head from under the blanket and looked at her with pleading eyes. "Please, let's talk. Don't kick me out."

Actually, there was nothing else for Aya to wake up for. It was mainly because she had slept so well at noon and was still wide awake now. She couldn't fall asleep at all, so she wanted to chat with someone.

"There's something I've been wanting to ask." Tiran thought for a moment and asked, "When you were attacked by that dragon-slaying group, I was actually there watching..."

"So you planned to capture me from the beginning?!" Aya widened her eyes.

"Don't interrupt me, you dummy!"

"Right, sorry."

"I mean, when you were breaking the barrier set up by that old wizard, you used Spatial Magic, right?"

"Um... yes."

"But your scales are clearly white. Isn't a white dragon usually an ice dragon? If I didn't think you were an ice dragon, which matches well with my elemental affinity, I wouldn't have bothered to capture you."

Aya thought to herself, damn. So, if she didn't have white scales, she wouldn't have been taken home by a human princess?!

"Aya, what kind of dragon are you exactly?"

"...A golden dragon."

"Oh, so you're golden... Huh?" Tiran abruptly kicked off the blanket and sat up from the bed, carefully examining Aya up and down with her turquoise-colored eyes. "Are you joking? Aren't golden dragons usually the ones with golden scales, shining all over?"

If we were to compare dragons to humans, there would also be a distinction between commoners and nobles among them. The golden colossal dragon was the king of the dragons. This was most evident in terms of power. Ordinary colossal dragons could generally only use a single elemental magic, while those who could master two elements were considered a variant.

The golden colossal dragon was innately attuned to all elemental attributes, from basic earth, water, wind, and fire to advanced darkness, light, and space, and excelled in all of them.

It was like playing a game where regular players could only choose one profession, while the golden colossal dragon could freely choose any profession, and not just the basic skills and weapons, but also the advanced skills of each profession. While others struggled to unleash a single powerful move, the golden colossal dragon could effortlessly unleash more than a dozen moves, making people doubt if they were playing the same game.Even the professional dragon slayers and the dragon-slaying heroes who have truly defeated dragons would never waste their time targeting a golden dragon.

"In conclusion, you must be joking, Aya?" Tiran looked at Aya with a hint of contempt. "Even if you paint yourself gold, you still wouldn't pass for a golden dragon."

"I'm telling the truth!" Aya was excited and wanted to jump up to argue, but the blanket wrapped tightly around them prevented them from bouncing and almost rolled them to the side.

Tiran didn't say anything, but his expression clearly showed disbelief.

Then, without saying a word, Aya conjured several magic spheres, representing earth, water, wind, fire, darkness, and light.

"Now do you believe me?"

"I believe you, but what's with your scales? Did you paint them?"

"Well..." Aya yawned, making an effort to sit up and show Tiran their face. "Do you understand now?"

"Understand what?" Tiran impatiently threw a pillow at Aya's face. "I admit that you have a decent-looking face, but you don't have to show it off like this!"

"That's not what I meant. Look at my hair, and then look at the color of my eyes!"

Upon hearing his words, the princess observed again. She had already noticed that Aya's hair was white, but now she saw that the color of their irises had changed from the golden color of a dragon to an intoxicating wine red.

"The golden eyes of the Dragon in their dragon form are primarily due to their Dragon magic, which is difficult to control. That's why you all thought that all dragons have golden eyes. Now that my magic is sealed, what you see is my original eye color."

"Red eyes... a vampire... no, a vampire dragon?"

Aya almost coughed up blood: "Don't compare those low-level undead creatures to dragons!"

"Then what is it exactly?" Tiran grabbed their silky hair in frustration.

"You still can't see it, can you?! I have albinism! Damn it, both my dad and mom are purebred golden dragons, so why am I white?!"

A golden dragon with albinism? For a moment, the princess felt deceived. Albinism? A genetic disease? Inheritance through recessive genes? Welcome to high school biology mandatory course B! Damn it!

...

In the early morning, Aya woke up with a dizzy and throbbing head.

Ah, it feels terrible, like a splitting headache - it might even actually split. Is that woman a violent maniac? She wants to beat me up as soon as she opens her mouth. It's too much, isn't it? Thinking back, for the past two days, I haven't had a peaceful sleep at all.

Supporting their body, Aya noticed that Tiran, who was originally lying on the bed, was gone. In the large princess bedroom, there was only themselves left – no, a dragon.

Leaving me alone in the room? The princess really trusts me, she isn't afraid that I'll run away or something? Aya sighed and touched the metal collar around their neck.

How could I possibly run away? With my power sealed like this, it would be suicide to leave.

"I guess I still have to find a way to get my hands on that." Aya muttered softly as they contemplated a plan to acquire the key that Tiran had in their hand yesterday morning. It seemed a bit troublesome because it seemed like they carried it with them at all times.

Just as Aya was strategizing in their mind about how to obtain the key, footsteps could be heard outside the door. The sound was quite dense, as if there were quite a few people.

Before Aya could react, the expensive sandalwood door of the princess's room was pushed open, and several maids dressed in black and white maid outfits entered, lifting Aya off the ground without hesitation.

"What... what... what is this? Did I do something wrong?!"

"Please don't panic, Lord Aya."

The last person to enter the room was Mimi, the princess's personal maid and also the head maid of Gilias Castle. She stood by the door, smiled and bowed to Aya, her sakura pink short hair swaying slightly.

But this time, Mimi's smile failed to appease Aya, as Aya still felt that something was off.

"So... if I may ask, what is the purpose of this?"

"The princess believes that her subordinate always wearing the same clothes is beneath the dignity of the royal family, so she specifically had us custom-make several outfits for you."

As she spoke, two beautiful young ladies beside her began measuring Aya's shoulder width, waist circumference, and other measurements with a tape measure.

Aya let out a sigh of relief. It seemed like it wasn't something annoying after all, just that the measuring tape felt a bit uncomfortable on their body. What's with that vague unease?

"But there's one more question," Aya tilted her head, "What kind of clothes are we going to make?"

"Well..." Mimi smiled sweetly, "Of course it's maid outfits."

Huh?
