Chapter 13: Double Trial

Having experienced a test before, Grace naturally understood what the dense black mist meant to her.

The previous test was a putrid swamp and numerous shadowy figures with sharp fangs. So, what kind of test would she face this time? Nobody knew.

She took a deep breath, and her entire body was immediately engulfed by the pitch-black mist.

Grace immediately ignited flames in her hands, intending to use them to illuminate the path ahead and intimidate and defend against any enemies.

It was rumored that beasts in the forest feared fire.

She hoped that this final phase of her witching career would bring her good luck and allow her to obtain the passport to return to a normal life.

So, even though her magic was burning along with the flames, she had no intention of stopping.

Soon, her wait bore fruit.

From within the unseen black mist ahead, a series of rapid and tense footsteps could be heard.

Even the old floor trembled slightly with each sound.

The footsteps grew closer, but the figure showed no sign of stopping.

Grace immediately focused her concentration.

She was certain that there were no other inhabitants in this mysterious room besides the demon apostle and herself.

Therefore, the creature approaching her must be an enemy.

With the blessing of her flame affinity, she could continuously throw small fireballs without needing any casting time.

"Splish, splish, splish..."

Faced with the rapidly approaching unknown enemy, the best way to greet it was with a deluge of fireballs.

"Boom, boom, boom!"

Multiple dull thuds followed, indicating that several fireballs had hit their targets head-on.

"Roar!"

A piercing beastly roar echoed within the black mist.

The creature, whose fur had been ignited by the fireballs, was semi-visible in the darkness. Its thirst for revenge made it almost ignore the pain as it flew towards the originator of the spells, wanting to bite off her head.

The enemy finally revealed itself.

It was a monster that stood nearly two meters tall and had a humanoid shape.

Its fur, which covered its body, had been completely burned by the flames, and even now, there were faint embers on its head.

Upon discovering Grace's figure, the monster excitedly leaped high into the air.

At that moment, the corridor's ceiling instantly rose, giving the monster enough space to unleash its jump.

The sharp claws on its fingertips were like hardened blades. Once they made contact with Grace, they would tear her apart on the spot.

Grace had never encountered such a ruthlessly evil individual before.

She had originally thought that throwing a dozen fireballs would be enough to deal with it, just like last time.

But unexpectedly, the humanoid monster seemed to be unaffected by the power of the fireballs and quickly retaliated.

In her desperation, the hope of returning home overcame her fear. Grace clenched her hands tightly together, exerting all her strength, even if it meant depleting all her magic.

A fireball infused with abundant energy instantly formed in front of her.

Just as the monster's claws were about to reach Grace, the large fireball shot out with a resounding "boom," violently colliding with the oncoming monster.

The monster was immediately engulfed in the scorching flames. It weakly twisted its body and emitted a painful howl.

Even the raging flames instantly illuminated the surroundings, dispersing the black mist up to ten meters away.

Grace heaved a sigh of relief, feeling like she could collapse to the ground at any moment.

[Ding! You have comprehended the level 2 spell - Level 4 Flame Burst. With sufficient magic power, this skill can be cast instantly.]

Sigh...

Unfortunately, once she stepped out of the door, she would completely leave behind her identity as a witch.

Therefore, all these things were useless to her.

Instead of feeling joy, she felt a hint of melancholy.

The flames on the monster's body gradually dimmed, and the foul odor from the burning began to seep into the corridor.

Just as Grace was preparing to leave, more shadowy figures appeared within the black mist.

She froze in place instantly.

Damn... does this mean everything is not over yet?

But she had just exhausted all her strength a moment ago, and her magic was almost entirely depleted. She had no more fighting power left.Is it possible... that this trial is actually a no-win situation, and she has no way of leaving here at all?

The so-called farewell to her witch identity might just be a trick by the demon apostle.

Grace was instantly filled with deep despair.

No... this doesn't make sense.

That demon apostle, who appeared as a young man with black hair, doesn't seem like the kind of sadist who enjoys manipulating weak emotions.

She carefully thought about the words the demon apostle had said before.

"I know that you have suffered a lot at such a young age, but you must remember that although life is full of hardships, there will always be someone who laughs in the end.

But if you give up halfway, then you will lose all possibilities for the future."

Grace quickly grasped the implied meaning behind it.

If she continues to feel fearful and even curses the demon apostle for contradicting himself because more monsters appear, or if she launches a suicide attack out of desperation.

The result would either be her forever trapped here, abandoned by the Nightmare Legion and engulfed in despair, or being killed by those mad monsters, prematurely ending her short yet agonizing life.

Therefore, her best course of action is to move forward without turning back or hesitating.

Even a slight wavering would undo all her previous efforts, rendering her unable to reach the other side.

With this thought, Grace's trembling heart finally began to calm down. Although she couldn't be certain that her judgment based on the words of the demon apostle was 100% correct, she had no other choice at this point.

Within the rolling black mist, she could faintly see more than twenty humanoid shadows.

Their gaze was like sharp razors, and with each step she took forward, she felt a tangible pain scraping against her skin.

But she remained unfazed, not even glancing sideways or pausing.

Even when the closest shadow was less than two meters away, emitting a terrifying and despairing aura that enveloped her, she acted as if she had never seen it, steadily passing by it.

Finally, as her foot crossed over the writhing darkness and touched the smooth wooden floor, she finally breathed a sigh of relief. She had made the right bet.

Those seemingly unbeatable humanoid shadows, as the demon apostle's final test, were actually checking the authenticity and strength of her determination to return home.

If she were to be overwhelmed by the intimidating presence of those shadows or even show slight signs of unease, those shadows would immediately attack and tear her apart.

Therefore, the correct way to pass this test is to ignore them, just as the apostle had said,

Although life is full of hardships, there will always be someone who laughs in the end. But if you give up halfway, then you will lose all possibilities for the future.

Grace pushed open the door smoothly,

She took one last deep look at the deep and incredibly dark corridor and softly said, "Thank you."
