Chapter 8: Tracing on a Rainy Night
update icon Updated at 2023/7/15 4:10:12

"The goal is right ahead, proceed as usual!"

Although it was pouring rain, the sound transmitted through the wireless earpieces could still be clearly heard by every team member.

"Yes, leader," the team members responded in unison.

Except for the deputy team leader Si Qiao, who was on his first field mission, most of the members in Team 2 were seasoned veterans. Even Xiaozhao, who was always referred to as the newcomer, had participated in handling two Class-C incidents before.

Therefore, Ke Zhigang didn't need to give too many instructions; everyone knew their responsibilities.

Since monsters generally consumed a lot of energy when passing through the space-time cracks, the initial three minutes had always been the golden period for handling incidents.

The team members almost jogged, striving to reach the scene in the shortest time possible.

"Boom!"

A half-meter high wall collapsed with a loud roar.

"Pay attention, the target seems to be testing its strength. Its recovery speed seems to be faster than we expected. Rope team, take immediate action once the target is found."

Everyone wore rain-resistant infrared night vision goggles, so the heavy rain didn't affect their visibility.

The rope team, as the name suggests, used rope guns that could emit high-voltage electricity to paralyze the target.

They didn't need to shoot with pinpoint accuracy; hitting the limbs would open the rope's grip, tightly entwining the target, and then continuously releasing high-voltage current to immobilize and slow down its movements.

Once effective, the rope gun would immediately release more wire ropes connected to the monster to bind it.

However, when encountering targets with large size or incredible strength, usually three or four guys had to handle the rope gun together to ensure that the target wouldn't shake them off and escape their control.

Everything was just as Ke Zhigang had expected.

Although this big guy was stronger than the ordinary Class-C incident monsters, it was still within their control.

When it fell to the ground and couldn't get up, he sighed in relief; the overtime for tonight's work was finally over.

Even if a thunderstorm raged all night, the same area would not be able to support another incident.

According to the convention, Xiaozhao, who was responsible for anesthesia, had to get close to verify the effectiveness.

What caught everyone off guard was that just as he approached the target, the monster, which they thought had already fainted, suddenly broke free from the rope and pierced his chest with its right claw.

A bright blood spurted out in the rain, leaving a deep mark.

"Xiaozhao!"

Ke Zhigang's eyes widened, and he rushed forward like a madman.

His arms suddenly swelled to more than twice their size in the process, just like Popeye, and he threw a punch at the monster's head.

"Let him go! You beast!"

The monster seemed unwilling to engage in a fight and threw off Xiaozhao, who was already dying. It turned its head and rushed into the nearby dense forest.

Ke Zhigang couldn't bear to see Xiaozhao, who was seriously injured, fall into the mud. He urgently flipped and caught his body perfectly.

"Cough... cough..."

Xiaozhao spewed out a mouthful of blood, his face pale. "I'm sorry, leader..."

"Don't talk! Hurry, quickly take him back to the city!" Ke Zhigang yelled sternly.

"Squeak..."

The agile armored vehicle had already stopped next to the messy backyard, and Si Qiao immediately jumped off. "Use this vehicle."

Ke Zhigang was furious. "If this vehicle leaves, how can we track down the escaped monster?"

Si Qiao wasn't wearing a combat helmet; the rain instantly soaked her short hair, but her eyes shone brightly in the rainy night.

"One of my specialties is tracking enemies. Don't waste time; the bus is not as flexible as this car. Listen to me!"

Ke Zhigang gritted his teeth and carried the dying Xiaozhao into the armored vehicle.

The accompanying medic immediately started to stop the bleeding.

It was only after the taillights of the armored vehicle disappeared at the corner of the building that Ke Zhigang turned to look at Si Qiao.

"Tell me, how are you going to track it?"

The team members, whose morale had dropped due to Xiaozhao's injury, all looked at Si Qiao. The latter wiped away the rainwater that covered his eyes and looked towards the deep forest, saying, "Just follow me."

"I hope you won't disappoint us!"

Just before they set off, Ke Zhigang waved to a police officer and pointed to the local residents hiding under the eaves, who had witnessed everything, saying, "Deal with him."

"Yes, team leader."

Sun Dasheng watched as a police officer approached him with a gun, and his first reaction was, "This is bad. Am I going to be silenced because I saw something I shouldn't have seen?"

"I didn't see anything, really. I just came out to relieve myself. Please believe me!"

All these people were dressed in police uniforms, obviously belonging to the national system.

As a simple courier in a small town, how could he dare to confront the national system? Isn't that seeking death?

Even if he wanted to run away, there were more than twenty people looking at him coldly. Where could he possibly escape to?

"Pfft..."

Sun Dasheng suddenly felt a pain in his chest, and when he looked down, he saw something stabbing into his chest. He not only felt excruciating pain, but his whole body convulsed.

Indeed, he couldn't escape the fate of being silenced. Just because he took another glance, he would have to pay with his life.

Soon, he lost consciousness and fell to the ground, limp.

It was unclear how long had passed when Sun Dasheng suddenly sneezed and woke up in a cold sweat.

By now, the heavy rain had stopped, but the cold wind continued to whistle in the air. He couldn't help but hold himself tightly, wondering why he had fallen asleep at the door.

Damn, is his brain malfunctioning?

He hurriedly rushed into the house and changed out his semi-wet clothes, feeling much better.

So, what had just happened?

He pondered it until his head hurt, but still couldn't piece it together.

In the end, Sun Dasheng had to give up thinking and decided to continue watching his short videos.

It was already late in the night.

Due to a major mistake made by the second team, a C-level incident had been upgraded to a B-level incident. The standby first and third teams also rushed to the scene to assist in the search for the missing target.

Fortunately, it had run into the forest next to the Wenshui Town, thus not causing a significant impact on society.

The rain had washed away most of the traces left by the target, rendering even police dogs ineffective in this situation.

At this moment, it seemed that people were relying solely on Si Qiao.

"Si Qiao, she graduated with a doctorate from the national advanced police academy at the age of twenty. She gave up a high-paying offer in the technical research department and instead requested frontline work. I heard she has an extraordinary ability. Once she locks onto a target, she can locate them three times within a day."

Ke Zhigang looked at the team leader of the first team, Fang Ziming, and furrowed his brows, saying, "How do you know that?"

Fang Ziming snorted, "With such a beautiful woman by your side, aren't you interested? I have friends from the police academy. It's easy to ask."

"Tch! I don't have time for that."

As the two whispered to each other, a dark building suddenly appeared in the late-night scenery.

"Wu's Hot Springs Hotel?"

The signboard by the gate kept flickering like ghostly lights, indicating the name of this courtyard.

Everyone found it very strange. Who in their right mind would open a hotel in such a remote place?

Si Qiao pointed in the direction of the hotel, and everyone nodded in understanding.

"Listen to my command. The first and second teams will surround it to prevent the monster from losing control again, and the third team will assault the building!"

"Yes, director!"

The three team leaders responded in unison through the public channel.
