"Who has been following me in the car for so long?"
I scowled and turned cautiously towards the black sedan behind me, which conveniently parked next to me.
The car door opened and out stepped a middle-aged man with a slightly balding forehead and a face full of chubby smiles. He was accompanied by three black-clad men wearing sunglasses, who looked like bodyguards.
"Don't you remember me? Lieutenant Haig, I am an executive from the North American Headquarters," he said.
Seeing my puzzled expression at his title, he changed his tone. "You can call me Franco, the secretary to the president of Elena Corporation."
(In my mind, I thought, Haig? Do I have such a foreign name?)
The man spoke with impeccable manners, and the black-clad men behind him seemed to have anticipated his needs and handed him a piece of paper.
He took the paper and held it up for me to see, smirking proudly.
I leaned closer to take a careful look... Goodness, that inconspicuous scrap of paper had several large zeroes drawn on it, with a three in front.
"Well, this is thirty million Japanese yen. If you don't mind..."
"Just get to the point, I don't like beating around the bush!" I said. It's hypocritical to refuse money when you have it.
"Here's the thing, we have a request for you. If you agree, we can even pay you seventy million," he said.
This guy is going to give me an additional seventy million?!
It can't be that simple to earn that much in compensation, right?
"You are indeed a smart person. Those maids earlier were just a test I arranged for you," he said with a sly smile. He seemed to have planned everything, even the three-dimensional holographic projection in the courtyard.
"So, boss, what do you need me to do?"
I just wanted to know the details of the mission. After urging him, he finally revealed the reason. "Hehe, it's not difficult. We want you to protect our president's daughter."
Protecting the president's daughter... Uh... Can I earn a billion just by doing this?
Although I didn't know when I became a lieutenant outside, the easy fortune I could get made me immediately throw away the displeasure I had just felt and said, "Okay, I can take on this mission. But please tell me the time, place, and target."
"The time is tonight, and as for the place, is your home okay?"
I smiled and nodded, making an OK gesture to indicate perfection.
But then, he hesitated and leaned closer to my ear, whispering those four words that shocked me.
"Protect the target: Yukari Shinkai!"
When he mentioned Yukari's name, I was surprised. I thought I must have misheard, so I grabbed his shoulder and shouted, "Are you saying Yukari Shinkai?"
"Yes, have you forgotten? Back then, you and..."
It seemed that my sudden excitement scared him too. He mechanically nodded, confirming my titanium alloy dog ears and started telling me the story I hated so much.
"That's enough. Since I've taken the job, you don't need to tell me what I already know," I said.
"Mr. Haig, now that we have agreed on the conditions, my subordinates will deliver the person to you exactly at midnight today."
After giving the instructions, he drove away in his Lincoln, leaving me alone in the rain, panicking. My short sleeves were already soaked.
"What's going on?"
At night, as soon as I returned home, I immediately searched for the keyword - Elena.
Elena Virus Pharmaceutical Company, ranked number one in the world, had developed a particle division that could conquer cancer cells and eradicate them when injected into the human body...
To my surprise, Yukari had such a huge background behind her!
Ring, ring, ring...
Just then, the doorbell in the hallway rang ominously.I nervously swallowed a mouthful of saliva and mumbled to myself, "Is it here already?"
