Chapter Twelve: Just Tell Me the Answer Directly

Without a search warrant, investigations can still be conducted if the parties involved are willing to be investigated. However, a search warrant allows for a "forced" investigation. Tende, as an assistant investigator, needs to convince others to cooperate voluntarily. Generally, as long as the requests are not overly aggressive, simple investigations can be carried out with two requests. It is generally acceptable to enter a room as long as there are witnesses present. Just like now, the old nun opened the door to the priest's room. It was within Tende's expectation that the nun would refuse the first time, but she wouldn't normally refuse the second time. Unless she intended to hide something serious, or unless she was directly involved. It's similar to sales, if you bother someone multiple times and they become annoyed, they will "compromise." Of course, Tende felt that he didn't annoy the nun. He believed that his personal charisma was explosive. "Don't rummage through his cabinet," the old nun specifically said. Although she allowed the two of them into the room, privacy is still privacy, and she has an obligation to protect the priest's privacy. "Okay," Tende casually flicked his hat and agreed. "Why did you flick your hat?" Bernie glanced at Tende. "It's a habit," Tende answered. "But that's a new hat," Bernie exposed Tende's lie. Tende's hand was placed on a diary and he didn't bother with Bernie. "Can I read this?" "..." The old nun hesitated, but before she could make a decision, Tende covered the old nun's line of sight and secretly opened it. The content of the diary was fairly normal, except that there were many praises for Etmira mixed in, which is understandable, considering that it is a clergy member. The neat room and simple decorations were indicative of the priest's general character. "Did you find anything?" Bernie couldn't help but whisper. The Vigilant hadn't read this priest's diary, but they had investigated other diaries of individuals who had become recipients. "It's similar to the diaries we investigated before," Tende said. The words were filled with a certain fanaticism, and when reading the diary, Tende felt as if he could see a face twisted with excessive fanaticism. "But do you think this priest has always been this fanatical or did he suddenly become this way one day?" "..." Bernie felt it was strange that Tende would throw this topic to him. This guy, could it be that he wanted Bernie to act as a cover for him? "I don't know, why don't you just give me the answer." Bernie had no intention of giving any answer. He could imagine that if he answered wrong, he would definitely be made fun of by this guy. "It should have started from one day, after all, if the priest was always so fanatical, and never hid his identity - he should be quite famous in Layton City." Tende said helplessly. Madmen are easy to become famous. The old nun listened to the conversation between the two of them and was completely puzzled. Tende paused for a moment, didn't say anything else, and quietly closed the diary. After wandering around in the priest's room for a while, he left with Bernie. "Thank you," Tende took off his hat and said to the old nun as he left. "Did you find anything useful?" "I think so, but my partner and I need to organize the information we collected." With that, he left only a back view for the old nun. As they walked past the tall columns of the monastery, shadows fell on the two Vigilants. From the moment Tende entered the room to the moment he left, it probably didn't even take half an hour. "You're done investigating?" Bernie heard that Tende used to be a sheriff, but he couldn't see it. Tende felt that Bernie was young and unreliable. Similarly, Bernie felt that this guy, who appeared worn out and middle-aged, was unreliable. "I know everything I need to know," Tende casually answered."I suspect there's something wrong with this monastery, after all, it has produced a priest who can transform into a beneficiary," Bernie voiced his opinion. "There might be something underground."

"There's nothing particularly underground, only a cellar for storing food," countered Tende.

"And our focus should not be on this monastery but on a clinic in Layton City," added Bernie.

"That priest often volunteers there," Tende mentioned.

"It is normal for clergy members to engage in the medical industry," Bernie thought for a few seconds before saying to Tende.

"Indeed, it is normal," Tende did not refute Bernie's statement. "Devout followers often choose to do good to fulfill their doctrine."

Working at a clinic or sanatorium is something believers would do.

But overzealous followers tend to want to be close to their god, to listen to what they believe to be the voice of their god.

"Did you see the blurred handwriting on the wall?"

"Blurred handwriting?" Bernie hadn't noticed it.

"Yes, it's been wiped, so the handwriting is faint and partially obscured by the edge of the bed," Tende said. "So it's normal for you not to have noticed."

"The ink used for the handwriting is not ordinary ink, it's darkened blood."

"There's a faint smell of rust."

"The pen used to write those words is on that priest's desk, and you can smell the scent of disinfectant," added Tende.

And the blood in the pen, that's the source of the smell of blood.

Because the pen looks ordinary, it's very easy to overlook.

"Normal pens don't use blood as ink."

"Are you sure you didn't see it wrong?" Bernie suddenly felt that what Tende said made sense, but it wasn't enough evidence.

There were indeed many fragmented pieces of information, but they couldn't be pieced together forcefully.

And Bernie also wondered if Tende was a dog, with such a keen sense of smell.

"It's just a casual guess, do you really think I'm a detective?"

"But if we go, we can confirm it, right?" Tende countered.

Tende knew very well that he wasn't a great detective. He deduced a lot of things, but lacked the most crucial step - connecting the dots.

But one thing to note is that Tende is not investigating a murder this time.

His opponent isn't even a person, it's an Image phenomenon that can't be explained by normal logic.

At times like this, intuition can be quite useful.

"We'll know if we go..."

Unconsciously, the two of them had already walked out of the monastery.

Leaving behind the chilly and oppressive atmosphere of the monastery, both Tende and Bernie suddenly felt the air become much fresher, and even the setting sun seemed brighter.

The sense of oppression from the monastery weighed on their bodies and minds.

Being in it felt unbearably heavy.

"Let's go to that clinic tonight."

"Tonight? Don't we need to prepare properly?"

"Prepare? Ah... right, we should prepare."

As Tende said these words, his eyes instinctively looked up at the sky.
