It had been a while since the last time the three sisters gathered, which was at Night Nolan's funeral.
As they say, a woman changes a lot as she grows up, and five years of separation was enough for the three sisters to go through significant transformations. Nora Nolan, who was already 20 years old and fully formed five years ago, didn't need any introduction. But Rhythm Nolan's growth was even more impressive.
During these five years, besides finishing her studies, she also joined the Royal Knights and most likely went through many battles and encounters. However, even though this woman might have dealt with numerous adversaries and dangers, she managed to stay innocent and untainted. Her serene and peaceful face made Lun Hui feel a hint of envy.
But when Smile Nolan, who slipped into the hall like a small animal, appeared, Lun Hui realized that ten years had passed without any significant change. It wasn't that Smile was petite; considering she was 1.6 meters tall, she was still within the average height range. However, there was a wildness in her every move, resembling a feline creature. What made it even more contrasting was that Smile still had the same East Asian porcelain doll-like appearance as five years ago.
With her long, straight black hair that could measure a foot, her face still looked almost the same as when she was sixteen. Although her height and body shape had matured in all aspects, her face seemed to belong to a middle school student.
"Smile, long time no see," Lun Hui tried to be warm and friendly, waving to get her attention.
But Smile obviously didn't appreciate Lun Hui's presence. After giving a disdainful glance at her presumed future "brother-in-law," she coldly hummed in response before dropping the package in her hand and making her way to the kitchen.
Lun Hui could only awkwardly retract her hand, suspended mid-air. Nora smiled and shrugged her shoulders at Lun Li.
"It seems like I'm not very likable," Lun Hui self-deprecatingly commented. "She probably still holds a grudge from back then."
"Who knows, you used to bully Smile a lot when you were younger. But if you hadn't slapped her that time, maybe she wouldn't be this cold towards you," Nora replied, starting to tidy up the dining table.
Lun Hui quickly moved to help. "I was impulsive back then, you know, young and all..."
"Oh? That doesn't sound like something the little Lun Hui would say," Nora stopped Lun Hui from assisting her. "Just sit down. Men shouldn't trouble themselves with household chores."
Lun Hui could only touch his nose and obediently return to the sofa. Nora may have been a pure Caucasian, but her character was unexpectedly traditional. She might not interfere in others' lives, but she had her own principles to adhere to.
"Nora is such a traditional and domesticated woman. Whoever marries her will be so lucky, able to handle both social occasions and the kitchen," Lun Hui sighed, silently adding in his mind, "and the bedroom."
Little did he know that Nora's expression froze, and she seemed somewhat uncomfortable with his comment.
"Speaking of Smile, I was really surprised back then. I've known you for so many years, and that was the only time I saw you get angry," Nora quickly changed the subject. "Although you were mischievous before, you always seemed carefree and relaxed about everything, so I was genuinely shocked."
"I already said it's because I was young and impulsive."
"Besides Night, what else could make you so impulsive?" Nora asked strangely.
Lun Hui smiled and shook his head, choosing not to answer. He didn't love Night; at such a young age, they could have a romantic relationship, but he didn't understand true love. However, Night was special in her own way, and even though he didn't love her, he quite liked her. Perhaps she was the soft spot in his heart, but unfortunately, that last bit of softness had also vanished.
Lost in thoughts for a few minutes, the three sisters had already brought out the dishes and cutlery from the kitchen as if they were dancing butterflies.
"Lun Hui, let's eat," Rhythm Nolan said lightly, as if she wasn't talking to anyone in particular. She served the last soup before settling down.
Smile, looking at the table full of delicious food after rushing back from a distance, was ready to quickly find a seat and eat. But her older sister Nora grabbed her by the collar, preventing her from doing so."Sis, why are you pulling me?" Smile blinked her big eyes at Nora.
"The head of the family is not seated yet, you cannot sit first. You have been wild outside for too long and should not forget the rules," Nora said calmly.
"This is not home, and besides, father is not here. Why talk so much about rules? It's just the three of us sisters, it doesn't matter," Smile said nonchalantly, but she had no choice but to listen to her eldest sister.
Lun Hui seemed to be thinking that it had nothing to do with her and that the large family had too many rules, but it took her a while to realize that Nora was actually looking at her.
"Ahem, my house belongs to the Nolan Family, in other words, it belongs to Rhythm. Moreover, Rhythm is more capable than me, being the commander of the Royal Knights. Logically and reasonably, Rhythm should sit at the head," Lun Li didn't care much about details, as she was not one to follow rules.
"Little Mei, although these things are not very important, today is the first time you and your husband are having dinner at home. Since it's the first time, we need to start off on a good note. Some things need to have order from the beginning to become rules," Nora said assertively.
"If I say you can sit, then sit," Rhythm Nolan gestured for Lun Hui to sit down, and then he himself walked to the right side.
This was a big deal. Lun Hui felt extremely uncomfortable sitting in this position, as if she had suddenly been given a strange sense of purpose and responsibility, especially when she felt the resentful gaze from Smile on the side.
But it had to be said, despite the resentful look, it was a bit like a cute little girl's complaint, which was hard to resist.
So Lun Hui decided to speak as little as possible and hide herself, making dinner go smoothly as if nothing had happened, slipping through the cracks of time.
The sound of clinking chopsticks and sparse bowls touching could be heard, everything was quiet.
But soon someone couldn't hold back.
"Sis, Second Sis, do you want to know where I went?" Smile suddenly said.
"You've been to so many places, I'm not interested anymore," Nora jokingly said.
"I went to Donglai Island for a sketching trip these days with a few friends," Smile said nonchalantly, continuing, "Guess what we found there? An ostrich beast!"
The ostrich beast is a relatively gentle species, but it is already endangered on the mainland. This species looks a bit like an ostrich, but it has a hump on its back like a camel, so it is called the ostrich beast.
"You went so far away to play again." Rhythm Nolan slightly furrowed his brows. "Donglai Island is about five hundred kilometers from our country's west coast, and I recently heard that the sea is not very safe."
"But that place is not considered international waters, Donglai Island is still our territory." Smile felt that the more dangerous it was, the more exciting it was. "Did you also hear? There have been rumors of Poseidon appearing in the deep sea to the west. Many fishing boats dare not go deep sea fishing anymore. But Second Sis, don't worry, Jie Ren is in our team, with him, we are safe."
"You're talking about that warrior named Song Jie Ren? He's really good, achieving master-level strength at only twenty-two years old." Rhythm Nolan also had an impression of this person and nodded slightly.
"That's right, Jie Ren is really amazing. Last time, he defeated a gluttonous dragon with just one punch. He's much stronger than a certain senior thief who only barely qualifies as a super thief at an old age," Smile said, secretly feeling wronged. She thought to herself that she had been hit even when lying down. It was fine for this young girl to praise others for being handsome and powerful, but it wasn't necessary to subtly imply negative things about me.
The most aggrieved was Miss Rhythm, who remained silent and did not retort. Lun Li knew that this girl had a fair personality, so the outcome must have been clearly distinguished.
"Song Jie Ren is indeed good, and the Song family is also acceptable. If you like him, I don't think Father would object," Nora expressed her support, thinking that Smile might have some feelings for the man.
"Sis, do you want to marry me off so early? Although Jie Ren is really good, I still want to explore a bit more. I'm still young and haven't had enough fun. If I get married so early, I won't get to enjoy myself," Smile didn't show any negative reaction to Nora's words, "Next time, we want to go and play in the Gaia Forest. It would be great if we could find a Mercury Beast to take pictures of."To their surprise, Rhythm Nolan put down his chopsticks and said, "It's not safe there lately, you're not allowed to go."
Lun Hui also had some knowledge about it. Gaia Deep Forest was one of the four major forest systems in the northern part of the continent. Beyond the forest was the foot of the Sacred Mountains. However, there were rumors recently of bandits appearing at the edge of the forest.
"Sis, aren't you planning to go to the northern forest to eradicate the bandits? Just take me with you, I'll follow the team and never get left behind," Smile didn't give up.
"The Royal Knights won't go after bandits, at least not easily. There are military forces stationed there, I just feel it's not safe," Rhythm Nolan said calmly. "I told you when you were young to learn some martial arts, but you refused. If you can train your Delan fighting Qi to deep purple, I won't care where you go."
Smile Nolan had no choice but to fall silent. Deep purple Delan fighting Qi was at least the level of a top-notch expert.
However, Lun Hui knew Smile's personality well. If there hadn't been any major changes in the past few years, she was probably still the type of person who wouldn't be easily swayed once she made up her mind. But Smile was surrounded by experts, so causing trouble would be quite challenging.
Halfway through the meal, everything quieted down.
"Lun Hui, are you comfortable at school? You've been a teacher for a week now," Rhythm suddenly showed concern for Lun Hui's situation.
"It's alright, the students are well-behaved, the leaders are responsible, and my colleagues work hard," Lun Hui casually replied while eating.
"Little Hui accepted a pure elf as an apprentice," Nora couldn't resist adding, trying to make the conversation more interesting.
This caught Smile and Rhythm's attention.
"Lun Hui, did you find out something about her? How can a pure elf, such a clean and innocent beautiful creature, become a thief?" Smile clearly didn't believe it.
"Little sister, you should call Lun Hui your brother-in-law," Nora reminded.
Though Rhythm Nolan didn't say anything, his interested ears perked up. Normal people might not notice, but those familiar with half-elves understood that elf ears were very sensitive. Some subtle movements could convey emotions.
"No way am I calling him brother-in-law. He's just a cheap son-in-law who conveniently took advantage of a verbal agreement with father. A few years ago, he was my brother-in-law and I reluctantly accepted it. Now, he actually married my second sister," Smile said coldly.
"That's because I'm lucky and blessed. Not only could I receive an elf apprentice, but I could also marry someone as perfect as Rhythm Nolan. It feels like I've used up all the blessings in my life," Lun Hui politely smiled, trying to please them, then continued to pick at his food.
"That elf is actually a rare Baya tribe elf from the northern part of the elf kingdom. She's quite famous in Thorn University," Nora tried to divert the attention. "Our teacher pays a lot of attention to this student since there aren't many elven students in all of Ukampa, and they all have remarkable talents. Especially this year, Thorn University admitted a male elven research bachelor, which made all the female students really excited."
"The Baya tribe elves are a rare branch of elves who are skilled in martial arts rather than magic. Impressive," Rhythm Nolan nodded.
Rhythm Nolan was well aware that the relationship between a mentor and an apprentice was very close, similar to that of a master and disciple, different from a normal teacher-student relationship. But this kind of relationship came with deeper obligations and responsibilities.
"Well, that's good. Elf students have good quality and easy to get along with, so I can relax," Lun Hui said without much ambition.
"I'm afraid the problem might arise when it's a male teacher and female students, especially when it's one-on-one teaching. It wouldn't be good if Little Hui can't control herself," Nora warned.
"I'm a person with principles," Lun Hui smirked. "Besides, no one else is interested in me."
"Some ordinary elf that no one else is interested in managed to marry my second sister," Smile sarcastically remarked, implying that Rhythm had lowered his standards by marrying her.
"That's a matter of your own free will, Smile, you seem a bit irritable tonight," Nora's expression turned serious. She could accept her beloved second sister getting married, especially to Lun Hui. In this situation, a few playful remarks could lighten the atmosphere. But if the provocations went too far, it couldn't be brushed off with just a laugh.Although Smile looks young with a busty figure, is she really just a child? She is already 21 years old, and after traveling around the world for so long, it's impossible for her to not have a sense of propriety. The three members of the Nolan Family may be wealthy, but it doesn't mean they are spoiled little girls.
"Do you think it was consensual? Second sister, is it true?" Smile sneered, then turned her head to look at Rhythm. "Second sister, although you have a detached personality, over these years..."
"Alright, that's enough," Rhythm Nolan suddenly interrupted, with a rather evasive tone.
Don't stop at an inexplicable place. I haven't heard the exciting part. Lun Hui looked around innocently.
"Who knows if he pursued second sister back then, and then used Night as a shield. Little Four was originally naive and ignorant, so she was easily deceived."
Only when certain words appeared did Lun Hui's expression relax slightly.
Nora quickly signaled Smile with her eyes, even Rhythm Nolan seemed a bit nervous.
The two of them knew very well how Lun Hui had slapped Smile in the face at the funeral five years ago. Lun Hui was never angry or impatient, always slow and lazy in doing things, but that was the impression five years ago.
But time could change a person's character once again. Lun Hui calmly finished drinking the soup after dinner.
"Maybe that's how it is. Although I originally wanted to choose Rhythm, a sudden inspiration made me kill two birds with one stone. I didn't expect it to be successful. Maybe I really have a talent for relying on others' fortune." Lun Hui pointed at her own face. "Look, this thick-skinned face, not many people can achieve that."
After speaking, she picked up her bowl and chopsticks and walked into the kitchen.
Smile was a little dazed, and the three sisters looked at each other.
"Now, can you tolerate hearing someone speak ill of her?" Smile asked in disbelief.
"Wait, let me make it clear...," Lun Hui poked her head out of the kitchen. "You have a serious misunderstanding. I don't love Night, and I never intended to do anything for her. Also, I got angry with you back then because you said something you shouldn't have while guarding the funeral. But now, it's been five years since she died, so it doesn't matter anymore."
Lun Hui never loved Night, and she never did anything for her, so she didn't want others to think of her as too kind-hearted. It was unnecessary, why?
Because Lun Hui is a thief.
