26. Dismal City (II)

I wandered aimlessly in the street. even if I was bored, I didn't want to go back so early, and I wanted to breathe more free air outside.

The street I just walked into was not a street, but a long alley, with flat dark green bricks on the ground and various residential houses lined up on both sides of the alley.

It was clearly daytime, but the road was as silent as a street closing at midnight.

Suddenly I heard a loud noise, because my ears are very sensitive. I can hear very subtle sound, and I knew the source of the sound must be some distance away. I could go there just to kill my boring time.

Located the source of the sound, I was running over according to the sound. There was a blur of human voice.

The closer I came the voice I would hear more clearly. I probably heard the contents like these.

"Now the humans have bullied us, but you just want to be a deserter! I didn't expect you to become so weak after only two years. Do you know the consequences of being a deserter?"

It was a young man's voice.

"My father has already died in battle. Why can't you still spare my mother?"

It was the voice of a little girl with a choked sob in her voice.

"Cut the crap! Come back with us now."

It was the voice of a woman.

Then there was an argument, mixed with the sound of a little girl crying. It was supposedly that the soldiers were catching a deserter, who wouldn't go back with them and had two children with him, a boy and a girl.

I arrived. It was in a small alley off a long alley, and a group of soldiers in white uniforms stood in front of the three men leaning against the wall.

"No!"

In the nick of time I condensed a magic ball and shot it towards the soldier, bouncing off the long sword in his hand, but in the air another soldier quickly caught his sword and held it tightly by the hilt.

That soldier had just nearly decapitated the young boy who was in front of them. Now the soldiers were looking back at me. Each of them looked at me angrily.

I approached them and was just about to ask about it when the yellow-haired woman in the corner sized me up and spoke up before me.

"I'll go with you. Don't do anything more to my children."

The woman's face was tear-stained, and she was dressed in a simple, coarse cloth. She covered her chest with a look of determination.

"Mummy ......"

The little girl bit her lip and sobbed softly, while the little boy next to her had his fists clenched with a grim look on his face.

The soldier who just tried to kill the little boy kept staring at me fiercely and spoke. “Who are you? You’d better not try to be brave. Otherwise, even if you are a noble, you will still be punished by the superior because you are helping deserters."

It was probably because my blue dress was so gorgeous that the soldiers took me for a noble lady.

I shook my head. If the master knew I was helping deserters she would have been furious too.

"I just don't want anyone to die here."

I counted four soldiers, two men and two women. I could feel that they had some strength, not the same as the soldiers who showed us the way in the city hall before. And their white armors on their uniforms seemed light and felt much more advanced than the bulky armors of those soldiers in the city hall.

The soldier who wanted to kill the little boy had brunette hair, and his age looked ...... If according to the appearance of human beings on Earth, he was about 17 or 18 years old, with the characteristic vigor of youth between his eyebrows.

But seeing the woman huddle against the wall, my heart tightened up a little. The devil armies were so malicious and that they won’t spare women and children.

"That's right."

The other male demon soldier was obviously older than the impulsive brunette-haired one, and had a more calm expression.

After he swept me coldly, he looked at the young boy who had survived the killing, "Grow up well and contribute to our Demon Kingdom."

"Hurley, I can understand your feelings, but now it is not the right time to run away for your own selfishness."

A female soldier among the soldiers said. She also had yellow hair and a gentle face. She called the woman by her name as if they were still somewhat related to each other.

"Shut up! Bitch, I don't want to lose my mother again."

The little girl cursed at the female soldier.

"You!"

The impulsive young man shook the sword in his hand, but held it back.

There was a red-haired female soldier next to her, and her character was probably the same as the impulsive young man's, because she was also angry. Her hand was tightly gripping the hilt of the sword stuck in the scabbard at her waist.

But the yellow-haired female soldier who was scolded was not angry either, instead she looked at the deserter.

"Come with us."

The deserter bit her lower lip and nodded, and had just taken two steps out when the little girl beside her pulled her shirt by her side with a death grip.

Her eyes welled up with tears. She said to the little boy, "Sidell, take good care of your sister."

She also looked in my direction, "Stop helping me."

The little boy, who had kept his head down and silent, nodded gently, took a few steps back, and broke his sister's hand that was clinging to the clothes of the deserter named Hurley. Then the little boy hugged the little girl.

"No! Mummy."

The little girl struggled while the little boy hugging her had two lines of tears under his long yellow bangs.

"Sidell, Sidell. When the war is over, mummy will definitely come back for you."

The boy nodded, but his hands were holding the crying girl in a death grip.

I just watched as the soldiers took the woman away, leaving only me and the two children in the empty alley.
