"Sure... it has come to this." White Goodson climbed up the shaky ladder, which clearly showed signs of aging. Every step he took made an unpleasant sound, and he was afraid that the ladder would break with his next step, as it was covered in rust.
"Useless brother, I told you to stop moving around. I can barely hold steady!" White Rosa shouted from below, gripping the ladder tightly. She wore gloves, decorated with a small fire dragon pattern, to prevent her hands from getting accidentally scratched by the rusty metal.
After contacting all the people they could reach, the White siblings couldn't find anyone who could take in the dragon girl. So they had to find a way to make money and bribe the guy in charge of the teleportation gate. The problem was how to make money for White Goodson. He could easily join the Exorcist guild and complete a few tasks to become wealthy. However, he couldn't do that. He didn't even use his abilities, and now he was using an old ladder that had been kept for a long time.
Finally, White Goodson's hand touched the signboard of the "Grocery Store". He forcefully tore off the cloth that said "Grocery Store" and revealed a few powerful characters - White Family Detective Agency, the original name of the signboard.
"It's really tough to climb such a ladder..."
It should have been an easy task for him to solve with a simple jump. It shouldn't have been so difficult, but he didn't want his sister to see him doing it.
White's parents used to run a detective agency, not a grocery store. They used to take all sorts of cases, but they stopped doing that after a certain year and changed to running a grocery store. The year after, they died in a strange accident.
"It's really nostalgic to see the original signboard," White Goodson sighed. They couldn't open the grocery store because they had no money to buy supplies, so he could only return to the family's old business.
"Yeah..." White Rosa's voice sounded absent-minded. White Goodson looked over and found his sister staring at the signboard, her spirit seemed distant and unfocused.
- It reminds her of something bad...
Just as White Goodson was about to approach her, White Rosa blocked him with her hand, showing a look that she didn't want him to get close. "Don't comfort me, I don't need your comfort!"
"What... it's rare for me to show kindness." White Goodson shrugged, feeling annoyed.
"Get lost! I told you not to bother me!" White Rosa yelled, pointing at White Goodson.
- When did this girl become so unreasonable? And why suddenly speak in Japanese!
Just as White Goodson was about to rebuke her, he heard a deep voice from behind him.
"Excuse me, are you Mr. White from the Grocery Store?"
White Goodson turned around and saw a man in a black old-fashioned trench coat, who appeared out of nowhere. The man had messy black hair, and his cold eyes were partly hidden behind his bangs, radiating a calm brown color. He was tall, with a sharply defined face, and a lightly scarred sharp nose. He carried a sword on his back, and White Goodson realized that this was definitely not an ordinary person.
"Yes, that's me. And you are?" White Goodson asked cautiously, while White Rosa, obviously affected by the man's presence, quietly hid behind him.
"I'm Minamoto Heart, a detective." The man's tone lacked any emotion, like a cold knife, filled with danger.
"Oh... so, Detective Heart, what do you want from me?" White Goodson couldn't understand why this detective was looking for him. So he casually asked.
"If you don't mind, I have a few questions about a case I'm investigating," Minamoto Heart skillfully took out a cigarette and lighter from his coat, lit the cigarette, and placed it between his lips.
"Just ask your questions." White Goodson hadn't figured out why this detective was looking for him, so he casually replied."That's right, I heard from the residents of the town that they heard a dragon roar in the mountains. A craftsman who sells wooden crafts told me that you were the only town resident to go to the mountains during that time," Minamoto Heart said slowly, unaware of the layer of sweat forming on White Goodson's forehead.
"So it's true..." White Rosa exclaimed beside them.
"Yes, that's right. Can we talk somewhere else?" White Goodson stammered, realizing that the detectives would soon start asking questions about the two deceased individuals. He regretted not getting rid of the bodies earlier.
Under White Rosa's puzzled gaze, White Goodson took Minamoto Heart's arm and started heading towards the mountains, using the excuse, "Being at the crime scene might help me remember more." Seeing how cooperative White Goodson was, Minamoto Heart didn't think too much and followed along.
"Detective, what do you want to ask me?" White Goodson leaned against a tree and casually asked.
"I know what you are," Minamoto Heart threw his cigarette on the ground and extinguished it with his foot, coldly staring at White Goodson. "Although the demonic aura is very weak, you are also an Exorcist. Fortunately, I don't need to beat around the bush anymore."
Minamoto Heart took out two photos from his trench coat and held them up in front of White Goodson, asking calmly, "Have you seen these two people?"
As soon as White Goodson saw the two people in the photos, he panicked. They were Cain and Nubi, whom he had personally dealt with.
"I haven't seen them," but White Goodson kept his cool and pretended not to know anything.
Minamoto Heart's eyebrows twitched subtly, and after a pause, he put the photos back into his trench coat. "Alright then, have you heard the sound of a dragon roar?"
He couldn't say "no" to this question, because the dragon roar was too loud, and the townspeople must have heard it. If White Goodson said he hadn't heard it, it would definitely raise Minamoto Heart's suspicion. He just needed to divert the attention away from his connection to the two dead individuals.
"I heard it, I was actually sleeping under this tree at that time. It really scared me," White Goodson pointed to the ground.
"Did you see the dragon then?" Minamoto Heart continued to ask, his hands in his pockets, looking indifferent. White Goodson started to doubt whether this detective was really professional; his attitude seemed too casual.
"I didn't see it, which is a shame! As you know, I'm a weak Exorcist, I've never seen a dragon before," White Goodson portrayed himself as a weakling, and even had the curiosity of a baby. Although Minamoto Heart didn't emit any demonic aura, White Goodson believed that this guy was definitely not someone to mess with.
"Alright, I understand," Minamoto Heart said calmly, losing interest in White Goodson. The only person present was a weak Exorcist who posed no threat to Cain and Nubi, so they could be ruled out. Since he hadn't seen the dragon, there was no need to continue questioning.
After parting ways, White Goodson quickly ran back to town, while Minamoto Heart prepared to search for more clues in the forest behind the mountains.
"Ring, ring—"
"What's up?" Minamoto Heart answered the phone and went straight to the point, as he didn't need to ask who was calling. Only one person knew his number.
"Something big came up," Schade said on the other end of the phone. Minamoto Heart could sense the urgency beneath her seemingly calm tone.
"Tell me," Minamoto Heart said, taking a cigarette out with one hand and placing it in his mouth. But he froze as soon as he pulled out the lighter."We have discovered a new aberration point, right at Mingshui Town," said Schade. In front of her was something that looked like a magic circle, with a three-dimensional map of Mingshui Town floating above it. In the center, slightly to the right, there was a larger red dot that was slowly moving.
"Can you find out what kind of creature it is?" asked Minamoto Heart as he hurried towards Mingshui Town. As an Exorcist, knowing about "aberration points" was essential. In simple terms, aberration points were locations where demons went berserk in the human world. However, not every place where a demon went berserk could be considered an aberration point. Only those incidents where demons posed a high threat to humans were identified as aberration points.
The reason for the appearance of these aberration points was due to the connection between the two worlds. Though the landscapes in the human world and the demon world differed in appearance, their coordinates were the same. For example, in the human world, the hinterland of Mingshui Town was a forest, while in the demon world, it corresponded to a cave at the same coordinates. When some demons arrived in the human world and returned home based on the coordinates, they found that their homes had changed. This is when demons would go berserk. Of course, this was just one of the reasons for demons going berserk.
"It's a dragon, a demon dragon," Schade said, enunciating each word.
