Chapter Four: Detention Center

Last night was indeed just a dream, because Tende woke up this morning and saw the familiar cement ceiling above him.

The ceiling was intact, and so were the lights.

He knew his name and his identity, unlike the state of sleepwalking he experienced last night.

Although he was a detective, he wasn't particularly talented, just an unnamed private detective.

The kind who occasionally helps people investigate infidelity cases.

His beard, however, was still unshaven and quite prickly.

And one more thing, he was still inside a jail cell.

Actually, strictly speaking, it was a detention center.

He hadn't committed any serious crime to be put in a jail cell.

After waking up, he realized there was someone waiting for him to get up.

It was a uniformed female security officer, standing upright.

As her title suggests, a security officer is in charge of maintaining security, so she was the one who threw Tende into the detention center.

Tende remembered her name, Liliana.

As for the surnames of others... why do you care so much?

This female security officer looked about eighteen years old, a full ten years younger than Tende.

Great! Very great!

"You can go now," Liliana said as she unlocked the door with her key.

Now, after completing the procedures, Tende could leave the detention center on his own.

Great! That's great!

"Thank you," Tende said in his hoarse voice.

Tende's unique voice even gave the impression that he had a built-in echo effect when speaking.

Unfortunately, it was not appealing.

Liliana didn't respond to Tende's words at all and left indifferently.

Tende was not angered nor did he think the other person was impolite. He skillfully followed another security officer to complete the procedures.

After finishing the procedures, Tende could finally leave the detention center where he had been locked up for two days.

Although the food here was not bad, it didn't feel good to be handcuffed.

He looked at the street in front of the security officer's office, and when a passenger carriage arrived, he extended his hand.

This was no ordinary carriage, but a carriage known as a "bus".

In terms of functionality, it was similar to the buses in Tende's original world, just slightly less advanced. It was driven by horses instead of internal combustion engines.

But as a bus, the carriage was larger than a regular carriage, just as a bus is larger than a small car.

By now, have you noticed something important?

That's right, Tende didn't belong to this world at all.

Or rather, it couldn't be said that he didn't belong, because he was "reincarnated" here.

By the way, it's not that this world hasn't developed internal combustion engines, it's just not widely spread.

Indeed, until the development of internal combustion engines, carriages were the most practical means of transportation.

For both carriage companies and passengers, it was affordable and reliable.

As for why Tende didn't go and develop internal combustion engines, that's too assumptive.

Tende had no knowledge of internal combustion engines and no interest in studying in that field because he had no talent for science.

In this world called Eris, the most reliable thing for him was that he knew a little bit about everything.

So unexpectedly, he thrived in criminal investigations, which is what allowed him to make a living as a private detective.

"Does this bus pass through Kana Ka Street?" Tende grabbed the handle of the bus and asked the coachman.

The city he was in was called Layton City, the capital of New Country.

As for New Country, it was a relatively developed country in Eris.

But when talking about developed, it was comparable to the Victorian era of a certain country in Tende's original world.

Of course, New Country might be a little bit better because the ground was cleaner.

"Yes," the coachman replied simply after Tende paid his fare.

Afterward, Tende sat at the back of the bus, crossed his arms, and planned to take a good rest.

It wasn't because he was tired from being in the detention center for two days, but because of the dream he had last night.

He really liked the feeling of being in a corner, where there was a bit of shadow covering him but not completely engulfing him in darkness. But unfortunately, Tende found that his favorite spot, the left corner, was already occupied. He sighed and reluctantly chose another corner. "Sir, why don't you sit here and have a nice chat?" a man wearing a light-colored coat said kindly to Tende. His coat, which should have been elegant, was adorned with silver chains and pendants that seemed more like street fashion accessories. "Chat about what?" Tende casually replied. He had no money in his pockets or even in his small safe, so he had nothing to lose if he was being tricked. Although the man's clothes had a bit of a street style, Tende thought it was within the realm of normal clothing. What caught Tende's attention was the triangular hat. The hat didn't really indicate anything, but Tende couldn't help but associate it with the person he dreamed about last night. He continued to observe. It wasn't the same person, but they had a close relationship. At least they shared the same "profession." This was the instinct of a private detective who had discovered an affair. "Let's discuss dreams," the man said with a meaningful smile. Tende instinctively glanced at the corners of the man's eyes and mouth. "Dreams?" Tende said as he sat next to the man, with a space between them. "Yes, I am curious about your dreams," the man said. "Did you have any particularly strange dreams last night?" Even though Tende hadn't said anything, this man seemed convinced that Tende had some strange dreams. Otherwise, he wouldn't have said that. Tende glanced at the man and said, "What if I did?" "If you did, maybe I can help you," the man said. "I happen to be quite skilled at interpreting dreams." He raised his triangular hat slightly and said mysteriously. Tende examined the man from top to bottom and couldn't help but feel that even if this person could interpret dreams, he wasn't very professional. Tende believed he was probably good at skateboarding, but the rest was questionable. "Maybe my dream was just meaningless," Tende said, not looking at the man but focusing on the scenery outside the carriage that was constantly retreating. "But what if it was a thought-provoking dream?" the man smiled. "Come to my office for a cup of tea, and we can continue to chat casually." Tende said, "I happen to be heading back to my office now." He was curious about what happened to him last night as well.
